side-track a bit…for synthesis marking scheme, is it you either get 2 marks or 0 ? I see the way my son’s teacher marks, even the slightest spelling mistake he will get 0 marks, never 0.5 or 1.5 marks.

yes strictly 0 or 2 marks. Cannot have spelling or grammar or tenses mistake.

I checked the dictionary before my earlier posting. Refusal can be a countable or uncountable noun. So when do we use it as a countable noun? -

What I meant was whether we could use 'except for' in place of 'except'.

ans should be:
had he swum (much - I am not sure if this word is there) faster, he would have won the race.
