If you wish to use 'except for', then this is the way I think it should be written :

Except for Allen, the rest do not like to play chess.

But then I understand that the 'except' is not placed in the beginning of the sentence.

You are right for the 2nd qn (Billy) but 1st (Ellen) i part of it forget liao. But if they did put like to, i guess you'll have to follow the swntence structure. :rahrah: Jia you for PSLE!

For Ellen: You can use except but it shouldn't be at the beginning of the sentence. Instead is not appropriate here.
For Billy: I still think it's refusal.

Since \"will be coming\" is used, I think it should be \"won't\".
