I saw the top school papers for 2011, for P6 in Thomson Plaza, they're out.
Yup...bought a set yesterday from a pushcart at Bukit Panjang Plaza. $58. 13 schools I think.
Managed to staple and file 2 subjects this morn...too tired to continue.
Be careful when you handle the papers...I got cut several times, which was why I had to be slow and careful earlier. -

Dear parents,
We have hired a private Math & Science tutor for my daughter since P3 and she able to pass her two subjects. However her tutor left her without any notice when she was sitting for her P5 SA1 exam, thus she failed her 2 two subjects with a score of 23(Math) & 36 (Science). After SA 1 we quickly get her a male tutor. Again she failed her math (score 23) & Science (47.5) for her SA 2. Now we are in the lost and very worries for her as next year is her PSLE.
Appreciate your advices on
-What shall we do now with this very short of period before the PSLE?
- How to help my daughter to bring her confidential back?
- Should we change the present tutor immediately? If yes, any recommendation?
- Thought of quiting my present job to stay at home to guide and give moral support to my daughter, is advisable?
Thanks in advance

Amy, no tutors can replace what parents can do to help our kids. Tutor will only come once a week, what your DD needs is daily practice which you should try to do with her.
Find an experience tutor and work with the tutor. Be realistic, work at building foundation at this stage and ensure she score all the "easy" / "average difficulty" questions marks. This should enable her to reach a pass for the subject. Then proceed to the "more difficult" questions. Even if she cannot do the questions on a whole, teaching her to identify and proceed with part of question that will also assist her in scoring some marks.
Your DD probably need lots of practice for Maths, and exposure to Science questions by topics to enable her to "see light" for that subject. It would be good if you can get the tutor to come in more frequently (at least 2-3 times a week) during the hol period, and you must be hands-on in monitoring and helping her at times when tutor not around. It will take lots of hard work and effort, but it is possible to "drill" for Maths and Science and achieve a decent score by PSLE. Do not give up, and All the Best to your DD! -

It's not wrong to teach kids more about Chinese...it's a language and Mother tongue. So they should learn more about it and not bcos of passing exams.BeContented:
I did not focus on the chinese idioms at all during my ds1 PSLE.They will not be tested in Paper 2. AT most can only use in Paper 1. So to me it is not so important.
Tho I do hope the kids will learn some proverbs/idioms etc to help score in exam, personally I prefer them to learn more and just simply appreciate them. Some of them are actually very very interesting. I have some collections since years back but mainly they are words only, so quite difficult to attract kids and people who have no interest, unlike the current versions with lotsa illustrations.
Similarly, when I try to teach some Chinese to my kids, I have never really bothered about syllabus....as long as it's age appropriate, no harm learning right? Let's hope I'm not using the wrong method
Chinese is a very interesting subject and when I read his Oral reference, I do point out to my boy.
Chinese is made more interesting now with those cartoon-like books to explain how idioms come about.
I bought a set of 4 books for Chinese Idioms in cartoon illustration for my boy. He's interested and keep them for his bedside reading... encouraging right?
He even described the cartoons to me in Chinese, but when I ask him what is that idiom, he couldn't tell me! Faint!

Funkymonkey,Hi All,
My DS will be sitting for PSLE in 2012 too....
We've started last week on his weaker topics on math...we don't have tuition except for chinese and i'm worried that i may not know all the answers to his questions....too late to get a tutor now... and i'm not sure tuition centres are any good...any advice?
Nice to \"see\" u again
Suggest you try out the Maths topic with your son on your own. For questions you cannot answer, you can post in the Maths thread of this forum. There are forummers like Tianzhu & MathIzzzFun who are fantastic in solving Maths problems with very clearly explained solutions. I've learnt much from them.
Hope this helps. -
My ds will be taking his PSLE in 2012 too. He is doing some work at home but have not started revising in depth yet. Going to start in Nov/Dec holidays. Good luck to all taking PSLE in 2012.
