      Hi Essential

Think Chenoceau has helped with the link.

From my understanding, T score requires a few components namely :-

      (i) National average mark - N
(ii) Your child's mark - YS
      (iii) standard deviation - SD

The formula is 50 + [(10*(YS-N)]/SD for individual subjects.
Different subject has different N and different SD. you need to work them out first.
sum up the 4 subjects' individual T score you get the Total T score for 4subjects.
      Eg
I have just worked out my son's T score for chinese.

      His score was 54.5
      His school average was 69.2
      SD 13.5
      = 50 + [10*(54.5-69.2)]/13.5
      = 39.11

50 is the average and if your child gets marks lower than national level, he gets lower T score than 50. If he gets marks higher than national level, he gets higher T score than 50.

PS. If what I wrote is incorrect, please assist in explanation so I will have a better understanding too

      How do you get SD?

Sorry all information was given to me . guess I shouldn't say \"you need to work them out first\", you need to be given the figures.

These figures were given in the report book. (The school has to work out these figures.)

        Chenonceau:
        To calculate SD

        (1) Calculate average score for all people who took exam
        (2) Take each individual student's score MINUS the average
        (3) Calculate the square of (each individual student's score MINUS the average)
        (4) Sum up the squares in Step 3
        (5) Divide the sum of squares in Step 4 by the # of people who took exam
        (6) Calculate the square root of the answer in Step 5
Wow, thank you .this will be a complicating exercise for me if I have to work out the SD myself. :slapshead:

Annamom … kekekekeke… yeah, one needs the scores of all the students who took the exam to calculate SD and the average. Your school gives these figures? Lucky you!!

Is your child in P5? Mine is in P5. No one gave us these numbers leh…

On our end we're doing a 2 Week Chinese Boot Camp. DS has to process 4 China Compos everyday + 2 Compre Passages + 1 Chapter Ting Xie. Hopefully, this'll give him a booster shot in Chinese for next year. :xedfingers:

He's usually done by 3-4pm, and then he likes to read short stories on the internet because he wanna try writing a short story.

I rented Kung Fu Panda today but he refused to watch!! I had to MAKE him because I didn't wanna waste $5/=.

                Chen,
Every year from P1 - P6, my kids' sch will provide a slip of paper in the report book that details the kid's class and level's mean, max, min marks, as well as sd. For upper pri, they even have a mid and a final year one, so that we can track our kid's performance vs his / her class and vs his / her level cohort.

Really? I wonder if my DS has. Maybe I have been so blur the past 5 years and this year. It didn't occur to us to ask and compare... but I AM interested to know because whatever it is... PSLE is a normed exam.

Chenonceau, should have, we get two such statistics a year (mid and final). I asked the teachers before - it is a standard MOE cockpit programme written to churn out the statistics as described by Pen88n.

However, I feel the comparison is still limited as it is based on a school cohort unlike PSLE which is national-wide.

Yes, he will be in P6 next year. Think different schools do things differently. My nephew's school has position ranking but not my son's school.

I use the information to gauge if my son is above or below average among his peers as well as get an idea if the paper was tough or simple. 😄
