GEP 2011 - Screening & Selection

American Mathematics Contest 8, it's ok, we learn as we go along toohongbaocollector:
There seems to be differing feedback on the ACSs GEP results. From the horse's mouth, ACSJ had 17 qualifiers from round 2 and ACSP had 13. That makes a total of 30 qualifiers from the ACS family, leaving 20 places for other potentials. Can someone help me with the advantages and disadvantages of doing HCL now as compared with later and if there is any distinct advantage of doing it at all anyway? If we opt out of HCL now, will we be able to opt in at the commencement of GEP P4 next year or at any point next year? If not, can we do so at a later point in time? Thanks for helping with these queries!
Thanks.
Btw what is AMC? ^.^ we have never sent our kids for enrichment before so kinda clueless about the terminologies used.

My ds took AMC8 last year (P4) and this year. The following is from Maths Oasis website:
Maths Oasis invites you to participate in the 27th American Mathematics Contest 8 (AMC
that will be held in Singapore on 15 Nov 2011.
This contest is suitable for students from
P4-6
Sec 1-2 and aged 14.5 years and below.
Were arranged by the school. I treated them like extra practice.[/quote]
Oh, nice school, my DS's school doesn't. DS took it up himself & ask me to register for him. I don't even know what is it at first.

But the AMC is over for this year right?:)

Hi! I am very blurred with all these test. May I know do all these test help in DSA?
i think those interested in AMC are ones who like to challenge themselves mathematically. Maths Olympiads are catered for P5/P6. For lower level (P4 onwards), if they want something in addition to ICAS (Australia Competition, available from P2 onwards), AMC might be a choice.
not sure about the usefulness of AMC for DSA purpose, i just chanced upon this AMC via this thread only days ago... -

But it is sad to see such cases, the child is saddled w so much psychological and emotional stress.jtoh:
Sometimes I think some parents take GEP too seriously. Why scold the child if he/she couldn't get into GEP? It just means the kid is better off in mainstream.
Perhaps it's pride and ego....like not making the cut as a top pupil while a few others lesser known kids got selected.

I m pretty surprised that many of those that got thru r not top students in their school... Like my Ds is one of those surpise case.. Thought of gg to GEP for experience but without any thoughts of getting into it.. It was a struggle to decide to move on.. He is excited abt going for it but yet telling me that sometimes he wished he didn't get in then he don't have to leave his friends.. This is tough for a 9 yr old..Nebbermind:

In lower primary, some of the kids who top the school aren't necessarily the brightest. They're very very hardworking. In lower primary you can do very well if you work hard. These are not the ones who'll make it to GEP. Then there are those who are very intelligent but may not work as hard or have not found the secret to exam-smarts, so they don't score as well at exams. And some of these do make it to GEP bec they are high IQ.
