Hi, need some advice. My dd did quite well for PSLE and is interested to apply for NYGH or NJC. She likes NYGH better but I am concerned about the level of Chinese standard as it is a SAP sch. She scored A for Chinese during PSLE and did not take HCL though she qualified. I am not sure if she could cope as her Chinese is not great. However, she is hardworking. Just like to ask the following questions:

            1) Is HCL very difficult in NYGH ? What is the minimum grade one must score to be promoted to Sec 2? Is Chinese Literature one of the examinable subject and are the marks included in overall score ? Will one be greatly disadvantaged if she does not do well for HCL ?

            2) Is it true that it is compulsory to score at least B3 for HCL at O' level to be exempted for Chinese at JC though MOE requirement is only a pass in HCL ?

3) If one does not meet the minimum criteria for HCL of B3 at NYGH for O’ level and have to continue taking Chinese at JC, will the subject be still examinable for the next 2 years even though in theory by MOE standard, one has already passed?

What are the questions asked for the NY DSA interview?

How many mainstreamers are accepted through DSA for CCA?

Can anyone tell me if Strings in NY is tough? I heard from some seniors that there are lots of practices every week. Is that true?

                    Can somebody answer my question?

I must firstly qualify that I graduated in 2008 and hence don't remember the exact criteria precisely (and at any rate, it might have changed already).

In my time it was based on Mean Score Grade (basically, using the O level grading system, take the number for each subject's grade ie A1=1, A2=2 etc, add them together and divide by the number of subjects to get the average), with some subjects having a heavier weightage (eg Language Arts). I think it was MSG of 3.0 or better to get promoted from Sec 1 - 3, MSG 2.5 or better to get promoted to J1 from Sec 4.

In short though, unless one is terribly lazy, it's actually very rare to get such a poor MSG. It's honestly NOT difficult to get promoted at all as long as one is consistent.

From sec 1 - 3, MSG should not be more than 4.0. ie, average for all subjects must be 60%. If your overall MSG is better than 4.0 but have some subjects scoring below 60%, you need to sit for a prep test when school reopens the following year. The school wants u to make an effort to do some revision during the school hols.

If you are consistent in your dAily work such as assignments and projects, you should not have problem.

                        3) If one does not meet the minimum criteria for HCL of B3 at NYGH for `O' level and have to continue taking Chinese at JC, will the subject be still examinable for the next 2 years even though in theory by MOE standard, one has already passed?
                        1) My Chinese was terrible (at least relative to my other subjects) and I gave my teachers plenty of grief. Still, I found it managable - it wasn't easy, but it's not of astronomically difficult proportions either. It's fine. I don't remember needing a minimum score for a specific subject per se - see my post above on the criteria for promotion! My information is 3 years out of date though so I would suggest phoning the school to confirm.

Chinese literature was not a subject offered at Sec 1-2 (at least when I was in NYGH). It's an optional Humanities subject in upper Sec.

It carries double weightage for the MSG, so yes, it will have an impact. This can be countered by doing well for other subject though, and in my honest opinion, getting promoted isn't difficult at all.

                        2) Yes. You need at least a B3 or better to be exempted from Chinese in HCI (this doesn't apply if you transfer to another school though, eg RJC). Otherwise, you'll have to take H1 Chinese (I think they sit for their exams in June or December of J1?)

                        3) You probably won't be studying H1 Chinese for the full two years. Most people finish it in one year. At any rate, if you do better in MTL (eg move up from a C5 to an A), you can use this in your University Admission Score: http://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/apply/local/alevel1/BYA-alevel1.html#top Put in this context, this is actually a policy designed to maximize one's chances at the local universities.

I would really encourage your daughter to go for NYGH; I really enjoyed my school days (such that I'm still answering questions some 3+ years after graduation!) I certainly wasn't good at Chinese by any stretch of the imagination and yet I did fine (A2 for O level HCL). It's really not difficult to cope, especially if one is hardworking. Personally, I think the emphasis on Chinese also forces you to do better and become more proficient in the language.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM or quote me. I can't promise that my answers are still relevant though, seeing that I've graduated some time ago.
