Any parents of gifted children here ?

ChiefKiasu:
It's really encouraging to hear about how gifted children may not really require that much hand holding, other than to feed their voracious need for knowledge.
Ya, I agree that gifted children do not need tuition and such. The issue with a lot of children going for tuition and enrichment (handholding as you may call it) is cos most of them are regular kids who are not gifted. And for this brunch of kids, to do well, the only thing is hardwork.
Oops...i'm in the wrong thread.... -
Hi EN,
My son was also scolded, and teacher pulled his collar and dragged him to me after school - for reading during chinese class after he completed his work; that was when he was in P1. But, well, he’s got to learn some socially appropriate skills… not to offend teachers…haha! They all have to learn survival skills, gifted or not. -
getz,
That is terrible. May I know is that one of the top schools (those with GEP), or is it a neighbourhood school ? -
Hi Getz
Yes, our kids learn after a while what the appropriate behaviour is & what is not. Eg drinking in class, is not allowed. He told me as soon as the teacher turns toward the blackboard, he gulps the drink asap.
Hello Tamarind & All Parents
If you happen to have children who are developing faster than kids of the same age, will you inform the teacher of your kids development? -
Not a neightbourhood school, but one of the aided ones... not GEP. That he only got a transfer in P4.
Will I tell teachers if my child is exceptional...hmm no! I think teachers may start to pick on him or may think I'm a parent who thinks too highly of my child etc. Teachers are not the most understanding lot (too much work) .. I was a teacher before, once upon a time! And I know some who would pick on kids. (especially when they feel parents are interfering). so I don't take chances unless I know the teacher well.

Hi Getz
I agree with your comment. -
EN, Getz,
I think the teacher should be able to recognize the ability of the child who is more advanced than the rest of the class. All teachers have been through training in NIE. They should know how to handle kids who finished their work very quickly. I think it is not right to make such kids just sit on the chair and do nothing.
I believe that most teachers are more concerned about students who are potential failure cases. They should not pay much attention to those who are doing well. So long as he/she is not disturbing the class.
I think that that child should be taught to respect the teacher. When the teacher is teaching, the child should pay attention. Even if he already knows everything she is saying, it is basic courtesy to listen when someone is trying to say something to you, no matter how boring it is
But the teacher does not talk through the whole lesson, right ? I am sure that half the time the students are asked to do work on their own. If a student completes the work in 5 minutes, while the rest of the class takes 30 minutes, then the teacher should give that student freedom to do whatever he wants, so long as he is not disrupting the class.
I am not sure how my girl's future primary school will be like. But I plan to talk to the teacher, not about my girl's development, but to understand from her what she thinks is the correct behaviour in class. I will definitely feedback to her or the principal if I think anything is not right. So I guess it is important to find a school which has teachers/principal who are willing to listen to feedback.
I am actually \"complain queen\"
My girl's dance class teacher(included in her PCF kindergarten) used to be late for up to 20 mins. No parents dare to complain. When I found out, I immediately complain to the head of the kindergarten. After that there was improvement. -
hi all
this is an interesting topic and i got to spend time to all the pages.
can any1 advise where can the kid do a test to distinguish between gifted and ADHD?? -
i am just curious that how GEP paper determine the kids to be giifted or not?
how is maths or english alone enough to gauge that? -
i am just curious that how GEP paper determine the kids to be giifted or not?
how is maths and english alone are enough to gauge that?
I think basically the 1st round with English and Maths tests will gauge if the kids are \"potentially gifted\". So if they can do well for these 2 subjects, some questions are beyond their level, they get shortlisted for the 2nd round of test.
There is a GAT (General Ability Test) paper which the child will need to take besides English and Maths for round 2. This is a psychometric test which supposedly will be able to differentiate those who are more suited for the GEP program than others.
