Hi there..I'm new here but I hope you all can help. My son scored 226 for his psle. What schools would you recommend? We're staying near the east coast. Would really appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks.

Hi Ita, same situation. don't really know what sch to choose? just to share with you. Beside Hai Sing, Pasir Ris, we've also look into Bedok area which I stay in Tampines & may even choose those that's score below 210 cos with their this result not up or down is the MOST difficult.

        Kid:

Can anyone advise on third languages? Should I choose French or Japanese? Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of learning these two languages? I'm still deciding which language should I learn as I'm totally foreign to these two languages though I know some basic Japanese (not much).

Just choose whichever interests you. You should know the dropout rate is pretty high because of the curriculum and time demands, which is why interest and self-motivation are impt.

You know the children need to travel to moe LC for the third Lang. French n Japanese are available in both centers and german only in bishan. Most school far away from the centers will charter bus to send the children there but they need to go home themselves. Every week, it is a 3h+ classroom lesson and some assigned online work which you are expected to do during weekends.

Japanese has the largest drop out rate followed by French and German. Japanese pace is very fast and from they need to learn the three writing scripts from the beginning. Some children are put off by this. However, there are many more Japanese resources such as books, movies, music etc. for French and German, not as much resources.

My son takes German and he and his few friends are still doing it at sec 3 this year. Many of his friends who started with jap and French have already quited. He is the only one in his class doing a third Lang after 3 years.

One more question here, anyone can help?

Is the COP for every school also inclusive of the score fm DSA candidates? If that's the case, we cannot use the COP as a reference. Or is it solely fm non-DSA applicants? Am confused.
          Thanks.
No, the COP is the T-score of the last student taken in by the school during the S1 Central Posting Exercise. For SAP schools, this COP includes the HMT bonus points if any.

Students who got in via DSA sports and academic etc are not included. So although MOE may list the median of a school as 265, this is just the median of students accepted during S1 Posting. Take into account the 400 students who DSA'd in via academics, especially those under Academic domain, and the median is very much higher.
phankao, my sincere feedback, 258 need not appeal, RGS will reject, you can imagine the long Q. My DD is in RGS. Last year, S1 posting, her best friend got 266, she made a mistake & chose DHS as 1st choice. Of course she got DHS, guess what? After posting results confirmed, she immediately went to RGS to appeal. It was not successful. My sincere sharing, please make sure the choice is right, there is no room for error! Don't waste the 1st choice,

:yikes: Make a mistake as in key in wrong code in system? Aiyo, the mum and dad never do four eye check?! :stupid: :slapshead: what a twist of fate!

Not that keyed-in wrong code, she wanted & chose DHS nearer to her home . While my DD & DW advised her parents repeatedly (not to let her decide). Posting day,all her top classmates 266 & above went RGS & NYG , she changed her mind during reporting day at DHS . The boys went RI & HCI, She cried buckets, her parents & she appealed but still got rejected! :stupid: That's the price of some parents being too democratic , quote RGS's sch authority! :?
That's so sad. I hope she's happy in DHS now.

              Blur Dad:
i was looking at S1 form, a bit confused on instruction re choice of 3rd language, can I put all choices from category 3 for eg. Japanese as 1st followed by German and French ? Or my 2nd and 3rd choice have to come from Category 1 and 2 ?

              Thanks for helping !

To my understanding, the answer is no.

Jap, French and German are under the same cat. You can only choose one language from each cat.

Will the system accept if u put two languages from the same cat (eg. Japanese and French) and then put a language from a different cat?

You may only put in only one language. E.g. Jap as 1st choice and leave 2nd & 3rd choice empty if you do not want to take any 3rd language from the other 2 cat.
My DS has 257+2 and we intend to put following choices:

                    1)HCI
                    2) NJC
                    3) VS IP
                    4) DHS
                    5) ACSI
                    6) VS O level

                    We live around Kallang.

                    Any comments from all?
Unlikely to get into HCI, so drop it. If u are prepared to travel place NJC as top choice follow by VS IP and DHS. If distance is a consideration, move VS iP to top follow by DHS.
:? Why unlikely to get into HCI? COP 2010 is 257. He has 257+2 , should have high chance.
Yes, I too don't understand why is HCI unlikely for 257+2?
                    2009 - 259
                    2010 - 257
                    2011 - 257

But in 2009 most school COPs were higher than 2010 COPs, meaning COPs dropped by 2-3 pts for 2010 sec 1 intake. Some rose in 2011, but HCI remained same for 2010 and 2011. So if the child is keen on the school with 257+2, I think should give it a go. Also I feel NJC COP may drop a bit this year as they have given out lesser than normal DSA offers, which opens up more vacancies for Sec 1 posting. šŸ˜„
Thanks for your comments.

My DS went for HCI dsa and was shortlisted but not successful. We went down to their consultation day and was told by the person-in-charge that DS chance is high and he predicted HCI COP this round will be 258. He told us to put HCI as first choice. We have also filled up the appeal form (we dont hv any dsa co/wl) to save the trouble of going down again on 21st Dec. DS like the school but one thing we dont like is that why they need to arrive at school by 7.15am since they are a full day school. At least NJC start at 7.45am ans DHS at 8am.

RI is nearer than HCI but with DS T-score and many people applying or rushing to appeal, we decided to save the trouble and be realistic.

We might change the fifth choice to VS 'o' level and 6th Anglican High. DW not very keen on ACSI due to the distance and potential ACS clique since alot of their student will be from affliliated school although my DS is from a methodist school (non affliliated to ACS). DS might felt left out and not happy. We like those school that have no affliliated school(RI HCI, VS, DHS) as their student will be from a diverse group/school/background, everyone start from an 'equal' footing, dont know each other, new friendship can be forged.

Great that you got advice directly from HCI. Good luck!

One more thing, I was told during the meeting at HCI that from this year onwards, MOE disallow those successful DSA candidate to appeal once they are confirmed a place through DSA. The only way is through principal and principal agreement whereby one agree to take and the other agree to release. So chances for appeal for those already got in through DSA are slim.
