Toddlers to get MMR jab earlierBy Karen Ng | Posted: 29 November 2011 1152 hrs

SINGAPORE: From next month, children will receive both doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine at a younger age.

The Health Ministry said toddlers will be given their first MMR jab at 12 months old.

The second jab will be administered at 15 to 18 months of age.

Currently, children get their first MMR vaccine before they turn two.

The second dose is administered only when they reach 6 or 7 years old.

The ministry said the earlier vaccinations will help reduce the number of measles cases seen in unvaccinated children aged 15 months and below.

Doctors added that as long as there is a three-month gap between the first and second jab, the child should not suffer from any side effects.

The number of measles cases in Singapore has jumped from 45 last year to 109 this year.

Dr Chong Chia Yin, head paediatrician at KK Women's & Children's Hospital, said: \"Most of the cases of measles this year were actually in the age group of 12 to 15 months.\"

\"The second dose is brought forward as there is a 5 per cent chance that the child who got vaccinated did not respond to the first dose and therefore the second dose is given earlier to boost their immunity,\" added Dr Chong.

                KS parents:
I had signed my boy up for Abacus classes. We did not join for the Speech & Drama. Outside of childcare, he is attending Beijing Language for chinese enrichment, Learning Point for Phonics and Yamaha Music Sch for music. Hope I am not the only one with so much programme

signed up my girl for the abacus & S&D in agape. think they dont have these areas professional so trust agape will work out the best for the kids.

                1. why do you sign up extra class for phonics? so you think agape is not doing a good job on this too?

                2. yamaha music - in Book 4 now? will you consider 1 to 1 @ yamaha?

wow.... is it common to go for these extra classes? @ least my girl is not in any lor... am i not doing enough for her??

Happen to me for a couple of days in a month as well. Worst is that after feedback to SPH, it still happens over subsequent months. Really sound my frustration then the frequency and services improve with a copy of 'mypaper' as well.

reiner: extra classes for phonics was influence by friends around, with 70-80% of time we speaking singlish to them, better to expose them with proper english. Hope to improve their spelling as well. Agape is doing not too bad with their syllabus.
As for music, my boy had interest in violin, so if this interest is still strong in that, will likely to pull out and go for 1 to 1 violin with cristofori or other recommendations.
