Champion:
Dear Champion,
Thanks for the recommendation so you have been using this book with your DS for the past years?smartmummy:
I have been using this book. This is very good for build the foundation concepts.smartmummy:
What are the other books you have bought? Why do you feel not enought practise? What kind of practices you looking for? This time I didn't buy first.I bought some other books. Then I feel that some books have not enough practise.
You referring to P4 level rite?smartmummy:
\"They\" referring to who or which books? So which book you buy for this year? this year as in P3 level or P4 level :? :scratchhead:They have good qns.
I bought this book for this year also.
I used step by step (Simon Eio) in P1. It is good for the kids to understand the concepts and learn how to apply it. But not very challenging. So I did not buy it for P2. Went for all challenging challenging type of questions and those with three or four steps problem. Then end up with very low marks (dropped from high band 1 to Band 2). I noticed she did very silly mistakes, that is what I thought initially. But now I am giving a second thought. May be I did not reinforce the basic concepts to her, thinking that she can remember whatever she learnt in P1 or in early P2. She lost marks in very easy questions where band 3 students also can do well. She scored full marks for all the challenging problems. Although I can not fully figure out what and when went wrong, I am thinking of doing easy sums as well this time round. So I also bought step by step by SimonEio. Of course, i also bought the challenging type of books. Hope this helps. -
Dear Champion,
I did not buy visible thinking yesterday. Went throβ the book. Although I liked it, now giving a second thought since I already have almost 10 asessment books for Maths. Of course, can not match your library.
I worry, may not be able to finish by the end of the year. I donβt have the second child to recycle also:) If she finishes most of it by june holidays, then will go and buy more. -
Champion:
Last year I couldn't finish step-by-step as I were waiting for school T finish. Then I didn't have time to finish.I left some topics without try.So this year I started early.First time I teach Maths for my son.Usually after he learnt from school I gave this book. Then from his mistakes I knew where he didn't understand, then I teach him. This time I have to remember the concept in my head for maths also like science.

You referring to P4 level rite?Yes I am referring P4,I bought visible thinking(VTS),we go through from school book(My pals are here)then gave him to do the workbook then I gave him VTS,that few qns only there to do.Then we tried the advanced learners topic by topic papers. That time my son didn't do well as he forgot the concept and me as well. When I taught him the correction, I taught wrong method then I realised I taught wrong way. Then finally I realised need more practise(drilling) in a specific topic.Different kids has different capability. This is for my son and for me.smartmummy:
\"They\" referring to who or which books? So which book you buy for this year?books that VTS and challenging Maths-CM(we haven't try CM as have very difficult qns. VTS and other books have qd qns means they build higher order thinking skills this year as in P3 level or P4 level :?P4 :scratchhead:They have good qns.
I bought this book for this year also.

I wont ask her to do all. If it is the same type of questions, will ask her to do few and skip the rest.

Hmmm....10 books a lot leh. I used to have ~6, but have since mellowed down. Frankly my kids can do very fast....to the point I cannot mark them in time, so end up I didn't mark a lot of them. Also, there is a lot of repetition work and time wasted on those they already grasped.
Think to complete 10 will be tough, do selectively. But of course, easier said than done cos' I didn't do that too
As they go higher level, they will have less time too. And importantly, must gauge the child's interest in the subject.....if they are not enthusiastic about Maths, too much of it can really stress them out.
I know of a mommy who tried hard to improve her gal's maths and even sent for 2 tuition.....but end up the gal has slided from high 90s to 70s (P4) and hates Maths now. So very important to manage properly and not reach this stage.
Just my opinion

For P4 I am Not buying a lot as DD1 will have CCA twice a week in school and I think the work load will get heavier tooI worry, may not be able to finish by the end of the year. I don't have the second child to recycle also:) If she finishes most of it by june holidays, then will go and buy more.
For now, I only have the Visible Thinking 4A and she is already giving me the  look!! :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Thanks BeContented for ur concern.
Previously i let him to more play and less study.now I strict, cos he didnβt have enough practise. We did past papers only for P3.We didnβt do the heuristics qns from that Andrew book.I always revise the school heuristics qns.The first time my son got wrong for didnβt think properly otherwise he lose marks in careless mistakes(copy the numbers wrongly). So now I plan to expose more difficult qns but gradually. -
HAPPYH:
Same here, no 2nd child to recycle, so I have to resist my tempation to buy not more than 1/2 book(s) in the beginning of year and top up only as and when needed to.Dear Champion,

Yes, I totally agree with you and thank you for highlighting. She may not have enough time. Since I am working, I do not have the luxury of writing it manually and give it to her for practice if she is not clear with some of the concepts. Moreover, if I use the same sentence structure, she remembers the question and do correctly even if she does not understand fully.Hmmm....10 books a lot leh. Yes, I will choose the qns for her and let her do selectively. And also this is my first time buying so many assessment books. Thank you.
