All About Preparing For Primary One

They are only 4 yo. Hence, even if their reading capability is advanced, there's no need to rush into black and white wordy chapter books. Picture books with beautiful illustrations are still important at this age. In fact, you can get them to analyse the pictures, observe expressions of the characters and also ask some infer questions. Gradually, they will soon progress to black and white books with no pictures.Hi hquek,
When reading these chapter books, do you ask the kid to read out word for word? How many pages each day? Do you finish one book first then move on to another book? Are they all black-and-white books?
I try to ask my 4-year olds to read aloud some parts of storybooks each day, but they are still only interested in those colourful picture books, although some can be quite wordy also. They enjoy flipping books at their own leisure time, but I know they do not read word for word when they are reading on their own, although sometimes they can tell me the story when i read alongside with them... They are not keen in those black-and-white pages books, even those with pictures (but no colour)... -

True. Ds1 wanted to, so I let him go on. But at times he will pullback and tire of so many words, so I cut down on books or get him more colorful stuff instead. For ds2, I'm also letting him set his pace.

A few more topics that are also popular..buds:
under 'Show & Tell' -
what are common topics pupils talk about, besides 'Introduce myself, my family, my favorite toy' ?
>My Favourite Vacation / Holiday
>My Favourite Food
>My New Year Celebration
>My Best Friend
>My Hobby
My Favourite Present
Generally it will be some topic that most, if not all, students can relate to personally. For TNS, there were a few suggested topics to pick from.
Agree. That's why most common topics begin with \"MY\"... hence students may have personal experience with them. Likewise for our DDs school, they were given a few topics to \"choose\" from.
However, that being said.. a friend once told me her dd got impromptu topics to talk about on the spot. :nailbite: So, just better to get the chatty side of the kiddies out earlier aniwaes. -
dimsum:
Erm... \"My favourite vacation / holiday \" is one popular topic? What if a kid does not have opportunity to go for hols?
Not a popular topic.. just a common topic.
LOLMum:
Yep correct. I had a compo topic for this when i was in primary schooli know of friends who didnt go overseas during the holidays. so they wrote about what they did during holidays.
and i wrote about the great family time we had at home and on our
various days outs when daddie was on leave. :please: -

Well said, dimsum. :goodpost:

Reading may become a chore if we do not make emphasis to reading
enjoyment. DD2 likes to complain that her jie reads that many books
in that short a time cos she doesn't actually internalize what she read.
As parents, we should read too.. or even have a specific time for reading
if we wish to. Just a quiet period where everyone does some reading.
Children will gradually take the cue from how often we read as well. We
should also show that we read proper books instead of just those
colourful magazines. :rotflmao: -

She should be waaayyy more than prepared liao having attended Montessori preschool for early childhood education. The Science n Geography covered in Montessori schools goes beyond P1. If she finishes/graduates from the Montessori school, she would've covered Grammar as well. So I say she's reali reali doing ok n on the right track. Breathe easy my fren. :celebrate:
You got #2 oredi?
My DD is in N2 and going to K1 next year. She has show & tell at her preschool. But my dd doesnt rehearse, I just know from her teacher that she says a sentence or two. She is too playful. Probably thinking her to put in some speech & drama classes.
Any experiences to share? Any one?
Her school is preparing her well.
Speech & drama may help a bit in a way, but not to say that it is something that cannot be done at home. You can prepare scripts together with her for a show and tell topic assigned for the week. Then get her to read the script with expression. After which you tell her if she can memorize them even better. Always good to have more of their inputs in the show and tell content instead of it being entirely our creative ideas.
You may want to try recording her with a video camera or your PC.. or even your handphone as a rehearsing technique. Fun to playback and see how they reflect on their presentation. My girls used to give themselves critiques.. too soft.. not enough expression.. yaaawwwn.. need more interesting content.. etc. I used to have a nice standing microphone in the house for any of the performance rehearsals.

That's for the tell part. As for the show part.. our dds school encourages them to bring \"props\" to aid their presentation. We make effort on this as it really helps jog the memory during those memory lapses during presentation day. For DD2 this year, parents were invited to see them perform their show and tell in class. :please: We loved the experience, plus DD2 did so very well. Very proud of her. :boogie:
Early preps help children memorize better and also build up their confidence.

Hi Buds!
u r so lucky as ur DDβs school allow the parents to see the show and tell.I always wanted to see,but my sonβs school didnβt invite parents. -
Hi folks,
I just want to share with u my experience.I am sorry if I repeat.
My son has been bring a paper for prepare show and tell (P1 and P2).There were some categories,I remember some of them.
1.Favourite toy
2.Favourite Story book
3.Favourite Photo
4.Favourite Experiment
5.Favourite Magic Trick
6.Fovourite souvenir
In the form they suggest what are the points need to be included.
Minimum 8 sentenses.I write down one/two sentence for one point. It had to finish in 2 minutes. So sort and sweet. So they can be finish in the time slot.
Most of the P1 kids brought toy.My son brought an simple electrical circuit experiment as he likes much than others. He got full marks. My son said that he only say the "coming from which class" and all the points.I got worried how he can do cos he was not familiar with show and tell.He never do before anything infront of a group of people.Luckily he did well.I heard T did the rehearsal. -
Good luck to all P1 kids!!!
First week of P1
