Our experiences shaped our views about our approach towards our kids' learning journey.


I have heard of stories whereby kids ae rather advanced because of enrichment classes, that they are bored in school and lost interest which affected their results.

I have also heard of stories whereby the kids are not affected and still able to perform very well.

Some have shared, to learn about knowledge that are not covered in school syllables, so that a balance can be achieved.

I doubt that there will be a consensus because there are so many factors involved. The only constant is that all parents want their kids to be successful and happy, even the concept of success and happiness have many definitions.

I'm still learning and finding the correct path

Is it safe to say write English names for all the lined exerise books and Chinese names for all the square exercise books? TIA


DD1 only has pink jackets and during this morning dry run to the school, it was very cold. So will buy the school jacket, easier for her to blend in

Based on my experience, the coaching process is far more painful when come to to coach a kid to learn&unlearn than coaching kid that knew nothing.

I will remain skeptical if young kid are exposed to skills that they do not need to know. It is not necesary good for the kid in the long run.

Don't quite agree with what u hv said. In the lst place, parents would not teach their children the wrong thing ba? Unless the parent themselves cannot teach then i believe thats where the the enrichment centres comes in handy. Note tat children picks up the fastest fm age 3 to 6 yrs. it's up to each individual on expectations of their kids. For me i firmly believe in laying strong foundation so that whatever which may comes after tat will not topple![/quote]I can see what you are coming from....

As i treasure Character Development more than Academic Excellence, my focus is more of getting my children to learn life skills and moral values.

Enrichment centre / ourselves use rote-learning approach to prepare our kids for school.. Is that a right approach ? It always remain to be seen.

I stand to my view.. Many times, coaches/teachers feedback that they had to spend time makes kids to un-learn before they can master a topic.

This is becoming more cheem to me. When my kids are young (and still they are quite young), I only focus on languages - english and chinese. I give them the help I can (read to them, buy books - okay, that part is my addiction).


I tried to coach DS1 in Maths but failed becos he doesn’t catch any ball and I get all worked up. Then I decided to stop and leave it to his kindy teacher. Happily, and I think in part due to his english standard, his maths results have been alright.

Hi All


I’m a newbie here. I am quite sotong over what to prepare for DS for start of P1 next week. I still couldn’t figure out which gate is which. Where to pick up DS from school etc. Can the kind mummies and daddies here share some information on what to expect for the first few days? DS still doesn’t know how to count money yet and I’m worried that he will have problems with buying food after the 9 days of catered food is over. Looking at DS, I wonder if he will be able to pack his own bag, responsible for his own belongings etc. Although he has been to childcare for K1 & K2, he is still at times dependent on the teachers to remind him of his belongings and often left things behind in school. Gosh, I think I got to buy extra stationery in case he loses them.

Anyone has kids who are in Pro-teach (hongwen)? Can share what they do over there? I tried to access the pro-teach website but it’s blocked.

Staying Independent


i would like to see a 10-11 yr child to manage this on his own (independent) without any parental intervention.

1. He finished a whole fish … removing bones on his/her own.
2. When he travels, do his own laundry, pack his own luggage.
3. When he does not do well in his studies… he comes to you and said "Dad… i will buck up"
4. No reminder from parent about his homework.
5. Stay cool and courteous. Be Nice.

I believe these are more important things to learn/know than academic excellence. Basically, we can’t be there with our child all the time.

Not cheem lah. Seek professional help; learns the learning profile of your child.

It is better not to confuse the kid. leave it to the teacher to do it. That's what i meant.. if we are unsure.. hands off. Leave it to the professional to do it.

Yes, before I damage maths for him permanently, I decided to hands off. Better someone who knows the right way to teach than my ‘could potentially be wrong’ methods.
