I'm not sure if I want my kid to be put thro so much hardship just so that she'll be a history maker. I just want her to have a cushy job and be happy all her life. I don't want her to be humiliated as being 'too stupid for schools' or sleep 4 hours a day, conduct 1000 experiments before she invented a lamp.

No need. No need. I just want her to lead a simple life and be a happy person.
What is a happy life, in your opinion? To my family, we tell the kids a person can never be happy if his heart is not quiet. I teach my children to meditate for mental relaxation. They sit with me for 15 mins twice a day to just be still, quiet and pay attention to their breathe. It calms their mind. Even though they find it hard to sit down for 15 mins, they do feel much better after being able to catch their wondering thoughts and go back to the breathe. For that 15 mins, they do not need to respond to any demands of anything or anyone or any thoughts but just be with themselves lovingly. Very often it's all these wondering thoughts that make people unhappy. We can be quite ill-discipline at times and not practise for days but we do return to practice.

Perhaps we should teach our children how to RELAX in other ways too. Take a walk in the park, do a sport, do art and craft, play an instrument. It has to start with the family culture and that means making time to do these things with them. I feel teaching them how to relax doing wholesome activities is very important as their school lives and adult lives later will be quite stressful.

My definition of a happy life may not be yours and it may not be my kid's, just like your relaxation method may not be an ideal relaxation method in another's eyes. In fact, meditation has religious implications for some faiths so it's out for us.

I'm not sure what I myself really mean when I said I want her to be happy. Or perhaps what I meant could be I hope she has a much smoother path in life than I did.

This is a thread about GEP but we're talking about happy and relaxation stuff.

I always thought care needs to be exercised when you use that line 'live as if today is the last day of your life'. When I was a teenager, I took it as 'don't bother to plan too much and don't need to study hard. For all I know, tomorrow I die liao'. So I always never did well in my studies.

ya u are right too ... so if one is positive, one will think in a positive way and if you are not then u will think in a negative way.... :heresmyfish: As all discussions are about our kids so definitely for the goodness sake of our kids right message with the right explanations must be brought across

There is labelling of GEP and non-GEP from P4-P6, and this continues in some secondary schools, for Sec1-4. Does anyone know, if this GEP and non-GEP labelling continues in the JC? I hope not, as I have a feeling that such a labelling is breeding elitism.

Just wondering whether any GEPers return to mainstream along their way, be it primary or secondary. What has been the percentage like? :?
