Yes you can take HCL in sec school even if you haven't taken it in primary school. You just need to have scored at least an A in CL and be in the top can't remember percent in PSLE.

My DS didn't take HCL in his primary school. However, he will be taking HCL in secondary 1 now. I guess there must be lots of \"catching up\" for him to do. Any advice what I should start him with? I only know that HCL requires lots of writing from his part, anything in particular that I should take note of?

A student must attain a minimum standard at the end of Sec 1 for HCL before he's allowed to continue in Sec 2, right ?

Just to check if it is necessary to have separate tuitions for Higher Chinese and Chinese in Secondary School. Do they have a lot of difference besides the standard being higher in Higher Chinese?

My ds is in Sec 2 this year and not taking HCL. But I would like him to take up HCL because of the 2 bonus points. Thus need some advices as I am still quite confuse between CL and HCL in secondary :

1) If he takes HCL in Sec 2, then he can take ‘O’ level CL in Sec 3 or ‘O’ level HCL in Sec 3 ? If he pass the paper, then does he need to take CL in Sec 4 ?

2) Is there CL and HCL papers in ‘O’ level or just 1 CL paper ?

3) Besides the 2 bonus points, what other benefits for taking HCL ?

Which means that if he doesn't get an 'A' in CL during the 'O' level at Sec 3, he will not be allowed to take the HCL 'O' level at Sec 4 ? In that case, will he need to take Chinese in Sec 4 and re-take the CL paper again in 'O' level in Sec 4 ?

Hi everyone,


My DS was chosen to take up higher chinese in sec 2. We are in a dilemma as to take or not. Everybody will be in the same class in sec 2 but if he is to take up higher chinese, he'll hv to change class. He did not want to change class as he has made some good friends already. As parents, we of course will like him to take up the subject. Can anyone pls advise the advantage of taking higher chinese. Will he still hv the chance to take in sec 3 if he hv gd result in sec 2 again? Thank you.

If your DS is interested in the Chinese language and has a strong foundation in it,I strongly suggest that he take up HCL.Because if he intends to go to a JC after his Olevels,he is only required to score D7 and above to be awarded 2 bonus points which is very important and helpful in the JAE posting of schools.Besides,if he's HCL grade is better than his english,provided that both his english and HCL is above C6,he can use his HCL to replace his english in his L1R5 to make his overall score lower.I've taken HCL in secondary school and I'm very glad that I've made a correct decision because I needed the extra 2 bonus point for entrance to a good JC besides my other 2 bonus points from my cca.And do remember,friends would not be forever with him,once he finishes his olevel,it's very hard to say that all his friends will still be with him.All the best!

I think HCL O level papers only in Oct/Nov.

A pupil who passes both English and HMTL at the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination and who qualifies for admission to a Junior College (JC)/Millennia Institute (MI) will be given a concession of two points in his application to the JC/MI of his choice. Priority for admission to a JC/MI will be given to a pupil with English and HMTL who scores the same number of points as one with English and MTL.
