Maths Assessment Books

Hi folks,

Any advice on which assessment books I should be get my kid to embark on to prepare her for P1? She’s in K2 now.

Pardon me for saying that, just buy a p1 math textbook and let your kid try on.

Hi all,


I am using Maths Visible Thinking (P3). I find this book very useful as they introduce the concepts in a systematic manner by giving more examples. However, I find several answers are wrong. I blindly looked at the answers and marked wrong. Then asked my DD to do corrections (of course I said \"how come so easy things also you make mistake....Not sure how many times I already told you.....This one is careless or you really dont understand...Mummy dont have time to go thro' again and again....If u are not sure or confident, tell me straightaway when I am teaching you....bla...bla.... :stompfeet: \"). Poor DD spent more than half an hour. Then I strated shouting again for taking so long. Later I found that she was taking so long becos she was getting the same answer (which I previously marked wrong).

Then I slowly looked at those questions and realised the answers given were wrong. Next??? Of course I apologised for my mistake. But she was very upset with me for a while.

Anyone came across this problem?

It happend to me for all subjects and all assessment books and papers. Yup first time I angry with my son then we did together then realized the given and wrong. After that if wrong check first really wring then only asked him to correct.

Ya, I did also scolded my DSs when they made a lot of mistakes. Nowadays, after marking them, I will go through the mistakes together with them, see what is the problem as what you mentioned could be the answers in answer sheet is wrong or why and how they derive or come to such answer.

Try not to scold them instead think in such a way: they are learning so 'ok' to make mistake now. Better to have mistakes now than during exam time, right? Just learn from mistakes.

I always tell my son, if he doesn't know certain topics, make all the mistakes NOW and learn from them...do not make same mistakes during exams. But if he has been taught, he should not be making mistakes.
Using Visible Thinking for my daughter. That title is not bad for reinforcement/revision.

Yes, you are right. It is better to learn now.

I am also trying my best not to shout/scold my DD. But sometimes I must admit that I could not control my anger:( Must work on this aspect.

Yes, Janet. I also find this book very informative for both parents and children. It can even be used as Math textbook in school. It is just more than 4 answers were wrong so far. I still like the book and will use it.

Visible Thinking can be used as a workbook in schools...it's not like the normal assessment book. There are no CA/SA tests in the book...just purely a good form of revision. I should be getting it for P3
