Subject Combination in JC

Hello guys!

I’m currently waiting for my posting results to be released.
So meanwhile, I’ve been thinking about the different combinations that I can take in the JCs that I can apply to.
I want to do either Accountancy or Law in university and so I’m wondering whether taking the arts combi of
H1: GP, PW, MT, Maths
H2: Econs, English Lit, History
would be okay?
Or would taking h2 maths be better?

yes, try to take H2 maths if possible, it is good for taking accountancy in future.

However, if you are opting for Law only, you may want to 'play safe'.

Each H2 subject is worth 17-20 points if you get an A. You need 85 points to get into Law and 75 for Accountancy although it might depend on the intake year. Some students get 7 A’s, but cannot get into Law. You might find it shocking, but govt does not want more graduates, and are happy if they go overseas to study and not come back. As you can be easily replaced by a foreigner. Don’t believe its ok, but don’t forget this bitter pill.

Yup agree with FrekiWang. H2 Math offers you more options later. Both Law and Accountancy are pretty competitive. Worse case, if you can’t get either, the H2 Math might put you in a better position for something like Econs (which is mostly math in Uni)

H1 - MTL, PW

Alternatively, if I do not qualify for KI

H2 - E Lit, Econs, History
H1 - Math, GP, MTL, PW

I am just rather concerned that if I choose the first combination - I would wind up not taking a proper 'contrasting subject' (because, KI wouldn't exactly qualify as a subject when taking courses in university). On the other hand, I really am not interested in math.

While many insist that math is really important... is it really that important if I'd probably want to do an arts/ humanities course (Literature, etc.) in university instead of a math/ science one (Mathematics, etc.)?

Also, hypothetically speaking, if one decides to drop KI (due to inability to cope with the demands of the subject) and switch to GP. What does one do with the contrasting subject element that is required?

Hence, is it possible to take H2 KI + H1 Math on top of H2 Lit, Econs, History? Just in case? (I know it probably doesn't exceed the academic units, but will it be a wise choice since it will be taxing? Or is it safer since it offers a contrasting subject to an arts stream student?)

Also, how recognised is KI in universities?

Firstly you have to qualify for KI. Your grades plus diagnostic test will determine if you are suited. If you intend to go overseas to study, KI or GP does not matter. Uni’s overseas are quite slack. Math is important. Take H1. Locally KI will stand in better light than GP (all else being equal).

10 points for H1 A, 20 points for H2 A. For each lower grade, minus 1.25 for H1 and 2.5 for H2. So H1 B is 8.75, H2 B is 17.5.

10 percentile for Law admission is 87.5, meaning you can probably afford at most 1 H2 B or 2 H1 B.

10 percentile for NUS/NTU Acct is 85-87.5, while SMU Accts is slightly lower than that.

My son has intended to select the following subjects for JC. We are wondering if this is a wise choice. Is there anything that my son has missed out for consideration?


H2 – Maths, Physic, Chem and Econs
H1 – GP & PW

His score for his O Level is as follow. His nett score is 7.

A1 – Eng, E Maths, Phy
A2 – Chem, Bio, A Maths
B3 – MT
B4 – Com Hum (SS, Hist)
C5 - HMT
