Does being left or right handed play a part in horrible handwriting as well?
-
Hi!
I dont thk left or right handed played any major part on the neatness of one's handwriting...
My DS1 is left-handed since young, did not delibrately change him as he always feels comfortable writing using his left hand and his handwriting is pretty neat.
On e other hand, my DS2 has v terrible handwriting(right-handed), compared to his peers at school... How terrible?...I once saw him having a piece of drawing in school, I thought he was scribbling all over and drawing jungle/forest/trees.... later then i realised it was a Chinese lesson whereby they are learning how to write Chinese strokes! :yikes:
It was then i realise how terrible his handwriting was (as compared to his peers, most of them could write the strokes).
So i enrolled him into Kumon - one of the reasons is that he can practise his writing everyday (daily worksheets). Altho' he is doing Kumon Maths, I do realised his handwriting improved even when he is writing English/Chinese words. Of course Kumon also helped him in his Maths and his concentration skills (sit down and complete his work everyday). :rahrah: -
my child has good handwriting. I guess he got it from me

My daughter is special child and had been going for therapy sessions with the Occuational therapist . Here is something she did to teach my kid, which may be useful for you all as well...
Draw three lines on the paper.
The top line in blue - to represent the sky
The middle line in green - to represent the ground
Bottom line in brown - to represent the earth
Then ask her to slowly copy words, and following whether must touch the sky ( capitals) , or normal ( between green and brown only).
There are also stages of development of a child's hands/ fingers.

I used to write extremely ugly when I was in lower Primary.
In Primary Three, my Chinese teacher couldn’t stand my handwriting and asked me to stay back and redo the entire assessment worksheet.
XD Could not go home until my words are legible.
From then on my handwriting improved, well, quite a bit XD

There are penmanship exercise books that can be found at places like popular. Those are for primary one, two and three (learn how to write cursive).Hi Parents,
My child is turning 3 year old and i would like to know how do you train your kids in holding their pens / pencils? I heard of this skill call penmanship, and how do we get our kids to learn that?
Thanks!
If I'm not wrong the Primary One penmanship book is purple in color.
My Primary school uses them. -

I found those Kumon workbooks such a God-sent! Mainly because my boy took one look, turned away, then did a double-take and turned back again to look at the colourful pictures. Then he was so curious he sat down to look at the colourful little pictures on the first page of the "Upper Case Letters" workbook. I then encouraged him to draw lines following the dotted lines in the workbook and then the rest is "history". He started beginning of this year doing the first workbook I bought for him and he has sinced completed FOUR workbooks! Yes, I could hardly believe it myself!
He has completed:
1. Upper Case Letter
2. Lower Case Letter
3. Numbers 1-30
4. Simple Maze
My boy 4.5 yo is now working on 3 books at the same time ie. the "Rhyme Words", the "Numbers 1-120" and "My first book of MAZE". Now, every morning at about 10 am after he bathe, he will pick up the 3 books and sit down at his square Ikea table to do his writing. We let him choose which book he wants to work on first. Usually he will do the "numbers" first since he like it, then do the "alphabet", then lastly do the "maze". He can actually sit for about one hour and once even 1 1/2 hr!
I am glad I have found something that my boy is interested in and Kumon workbooks allows me to systematically let him learn through by doing the work himself. I think he finds it satisfactory as well being able to complete and do so much writing.
Thank you Kumon! -
My mom used to scold me on my hand writing, she did scold me and of course as a child I was afraid of being scold. But, no matter how hard she tried my hand writing is the same. Even my teachers demanded so. What my mom did, she let my write every week end, my whole name, my teacher’s name, my school… Then, slowly my mom and also my teacher saw the improvement.
It takes time. Just be patient with your child. Eventually they will learn. -

Maybe you can get her to practice more on her handwriting? It's common for children to have illegible handwriting but you gotta teach her to write neatly otherwise she will have very illegible handwriting as she grow older.Original Title: Illegible Handwritting
