      MathAche:
      Can anybody provide the model for this problem?

      John has 3 times as many stamps as Peter. When John loses 420 stamps and Peter loses 40 stamps, Peter has twice as many stamps as John. How many stamps does each of them have at first?
      Dear MathAche,

      Hope this helps.

          Hi

          X --> 15 units
          After X gives 1/3 to Y, X --> 10 units, Y ---> 10 units + 70

          So, money each has :
          X --> 15 units
          Y --> 5 units + 70

          If X gives 1/5 to Y,
          X --> 12 units, Y --> 8 units + 70
          8 units + 70 = 12 units + 10 --> 4 units = 60, 1 unit = 15

          X --> 15 x $ 15 = $ 225
          Y --> 5 x $ 15 + & 70 = $ 145

          cheers.

            Thanks Tianzhu for your help. Really appreciated it.

            Just wondering if anyone knows how to solve this?

            Sam earns 7/9 as much as Andy. Ken’s salary is 1/6 of the total salary of the three men. Ken earns $2560 less than the combined salary of Sam and Andy. What is Sam’s salary?

            thanks all!!

                Hi

                Sam : Andy --> 7 : 9 --> 35u : 45u (total 80u)
                Ken : Sam + Andy --> 1 : 5 --> 16u : 80u

                80u-16u = 64u --> $ 2560
                1u --> $ 40

                35u --> 35 x $40 = $ 1400

                Sam's salary = $ 1400

                cheers.

                    Just to check how did you derive 35u:45u ?

                    Appreciate your help.

                      Hi
                      u r welcome 😄

                      Sam + Andy --> 7 + 9 = 16
                      Ken's salary : Sam + Andy --> 1: 5
                      So, need to make Sam + Andy a multiple of 5 and the lowest common multiple of 16 & 5 is 80 ie 16 x 5

                      cheers.

                        Thanks so much.

                        Was trying this:
                        Pam’s savings was 3/7 of Mary’s savings.
                        Jan’s savings was 2/5 of the total savings of the three children.
                        Pam and Mary have $240 more than jan.
                        How much is pam’s savings?

                        P:S —> 3:7
                        J: P+ S—> 2:4

                        Is this right? And how do I do the next step?

                        Thanks !!
