Juying Primary

Just curious to find out from parents whose kid is studying at JY. I've heard from friends and colleagues that during their kid's P1 orientation, the school will bring the children to their classroom where they are asked to do some testpaper. I've received the letter from JY informing of the orientation on 20-Nov, but the programme outline does not mention anything about this. Whereas my husband's colleague who received the school letter, it is stated that the school will give the children a test.
Is this test practised in every school ?
Any advice on the list of books/stationeries to buy ? Usually they will provide a list, some school even have the list all nicely packed into one package easier for the parents. Just wonder if we need to buy all ? :? -
Last yr when we are there for the orientation , the upper primary and teachers set up some ‘booth’ to show abt the school and some games for the coming P1 to play. After that we proceed to the hall. The letter will indicate yr child class and yr child will be sit by with chn fm the same class then the form teacher will then bring them to the class for some drawing (according to my boy last yr). Parents wl stay in the hall for the orientation. (They wl conduct a reading test – if I am not wrong is abt 2nd or 3rd of the sch.)
After that parents wl go the a diff class to fill in forms and collect name tab, book list, etc. This is the time we meet parents from the same class with our child. Some parents wl talk to each other and exchange hp no for our further survival……
Then, we can go the class to pick up our child then proceed to buy the book and uniforms. As for the booklist, they hv the opt to buy full set incl everything - textbk, exercise bk, and stationery. Last yr price : for Chinese students : textbks & wkbooks : S$64.30, exercise bks : S$19.80, stationery : S$12.70, book covers : S$9.20. Or u may tick the item that u want. If you do not want to buy the textbooks during the orientation, they do open others days. As for the uniforms side is a bit crowded cos parents need to search for their chn name tag according to class and check for mistake then try the uniform, etc…….
I remembered I spend abt 2hrs there… -
sorry… the reading test shd be 2nd or 3rd wk when school start

Hi ctcc, thanks for your info.
So your son is in P2 this year. So far how do you find the school and the teachers there ? Do they give a lot of homework ? Do your son join any CCA ?

Hi ctcc,
Is the reading test in english only or in both languages? Do u noe what the school do after the reading test? Thks! -
Hi ctcc,
How is the schoolbag load like for pri 1 in the first half of the year?
I wonder if we can make do with a Big cartoon character backpack or a ergonometric bag for heavy loads is more suitable?
Thanks! :? -
Yerdua:
Invest in a good and plain ergo bag, and not some cartoonsy bag which can become a liability after the fad passes.Hi ctcc,

Hi, mangokiwi & Yerdua
My boy is currently in P1.
The reading test is in english. The LSP start around Feb if I remember correctly.
The sch might look small not alot of stall but the teachers are really good. I am quite lucky that my boy teachers are all very good. There’s quite alot of hmewk daily. By early Sep, we already hv the 3rd parents teacher meeting session.
The schoolbag load is still quite ok for my boy. Somedays it wl be heavier if music, social studies, art are on the same day. -
Hi Chief, i'll take note of the passing fad as well!
Hi ctcc, thks for ur info! I better attend the orientation first before buying anything! -
Hi ctcc,
