Worried parents taking children to psychologists

Chenonceau:
this is actually the first thread I'm reading abt teachers in a while...
I reckon I can teach much better than this poor lady. She suffers in the system twice...
(1) as a Teacher who has too many students (and thus no bandwidth to do a good job, and feel pride in it)
(2) as a Mother who entrusted her son to a system that makes him feel like a loser
Next to students, Teachers are the least powerful components of the system. They can effectuate little change if policies are wrong... and TEXTBOOKS LOOK LIKE CHICK LIT. I know a married couple (both teach in MOE)... their kids go to Learning Lab because they don't have time to teach.
LOL on the chick lit part!! hahaha... ours was just full of weird illustrations of mr wollie and yaki. bizzare names huh.
anyway, my sympathies are fully with teachers. they are one overloaded bunch man. -

Has anyone noticed? The most gan cheong or worried parents are usually teachers so they teach their kids many years ahead and the kids become advanced kids....then they become bored in class.....then they have issues.........then....... Amongst my teachers friends, it is 100% true.
I feel like telling the teachers at the CC to hurry their study schedule. My kid has been learning the same old numbers for almost a year already.
But my kid has been taught a lot more at home. Guess I am a little kiasi, scare my kid lag behind when older.
I am not a teacher, but still scare. -
After reading this thread, I am more worry now. Think will bring my kid home earlier for a few days to add on some more information into the brain...

Precisely! I mean I believe everybody learns at a different pace..even adults do! some of us grasp much faster than others..some simply need more practice..but we get there someday! my dd is a dec born..so shes just hit 5 and her peers are aredy 6 or 5 and a half....i personally felt shes doing well in some areas if not all..and im fine with it...but i hate the anxiety the teachers give me and make me feel lousy as a parent...and its not the first time...i want a happy girl and a girl who would enjoy learning! cos i know tt she shuts out everything the minute the teacher gets frustrated and gets angry...so well...i just let her learn at her pace. but its not easy as parents..after all when other children are handling accelerated learning so well..theres always this fear that our child will be at the losing end...
Some 5 years ago, I stopped attending PTA. All they do is tell you how the kid is doing against his/her peers. I find that a total waste of time. I really don't need another set of boss to tell me what to do. So I have skipped all of them now. They give me too much pressure. They are passing their work to me. If my kid is not up to par, do something about it lor, tell me for what har? Who's the teacher? And how come school is asking us to put kids on tuition? They cannot teach? Or they want less work? Both are not acceptable.Daddy
Ive been told by my dd teachers in k2 that shes slow...n would only have the basics if she continues like this for the rest of the year...as much as they freak me out..i tell myself i know my dd..and shes fine!! i refuse to believe shes got a learning disability as i know they are saying it without saying it...
Yes... This mindset on slow=learning disability...
:faint: :siao:
We are not mass producing robots, are we?
The parents are overly anxious, yes, but there's nothing wrong with being anxious about our own kids. But because the schools are not taking the responsibilities, we have to. I have seen people going to psychologists to get their kids 'diagnosed' to avoid taking MT. What's going to happen next? Parents getting kids diagnosed so that they can get exempted from Math? English? Science? Or from the education system into an alternative scheme? To international schools for those who can afford? What kind of an education system is this? -
LadyInBlack:
oooh...but you have ample time to ensure hes prepared for p1..well, take it as your bonding time with your son! I usually read with my dd...anyway i enjoy reading..and i feel its so important to cultivate that habit..i still read as an adult and my 3 children know it and marvel at it...cos i was a bookworm..and erm..thats all i ever was!! lolvicki:

Err... My teachers are already telling me that I must put in more effort to bring up ds3 standard up.... Otherwise he might hve issues later!! N ds3 is only in N2 this year!!!! Thk he's a late developer as compared to his peers n his teachers are worried for him cos of the 'high' educational stds expected from kids nowadays!!
Haiz... Actually I see ds1's work n the amt of thgs he has to learn, I also worried for him! Now all my weeknites - once home - is to start interacting with him n start 'teaching him' via play!
Have 3 more yrs before P1!!
i encourage my children to read as even as they handle problem sums they need to understand what the question is asking them...so for me its read read read..a wide genre of books...and you will have a world of knowledge not just numbers and basic sc facts in your heads... :)
Something is so wrong. Why must a kid prepare for P1? Hello? P1? It is supposed to be the START of a formal education. They should know nothing, not evey ABCs or 123 before they start school?! What is happening? If they can read and do math by then great. But that should never be expected as norm. Something is wrong... something is wrong... -
Daddy
So, if you don't use these, you are considered wrong? Or any method is ok as long as the kid gets the answers?
Wah... Simi lai eh? :faint:Champion:
Hi Silverhorse,

This is the classic syndrome of the frog in a pot of slowly heated water. The phenomenon slowly creeps up on all of us... and because it is slow, it is imperceptible to most frogs.

Everyone prepares for P1 one now... what's wrong? Ok what... no big deal...
Throw a frog into hot water and it will realise something is wrong right away. Throw a frog into cold water and slowly heat it, and the frog won't know what is wrong until it has become boiled frog. -

I think Annabelle Cheong is a different. The main objection was her father as he was a hypocrite. He was very strict with her, and she was a top scholar. He was proper and upright outside but at home, he would watch porn. I think quite different leh...ksi:

The Teachers can't cope. They used to complain to MOE, who told them to PARTNER PARENTS. So this is how they partner parents. It's ok. I got the message, I will henceforth take my DS' education in hand. The Teachers can't cope. I will have to.
Happily enough... I can.
