kitty2, you can insist. That's what I did for DS.

Insisted but the teacher still rejected me,said is compulsory!!!! :stupid: I asked my son what they did in suppl classes. He said only going through compo, without doing it,must bring back to do.Go through homework and mark themselves.......doing crap!!!!I think they don't know english, don't know the meaning of SUPPLEMENTARY!!!!!

Teacher also said compulsory. I kept insisting. Then I told Teacher (nicely) that I have legal rights over my own child, and I WANT him OUT of supplementary.
It is compulsory even for our girls' school but we got her out of one or two... and without much trouble too. 😉

..In the midst of this crazy system we are in, our BELIEF in our children's self-worth, their identity is worth far more than any results on a slip of paper can do. The child must also believe they were worth more than what a slip of paper tells them. These days, I remind myself to keep telling my DS1 who is sitting for his PSLE this year, that yes you have to work hard, yes it's tough, yes you have your goals. AND if in the end, when the results do not commensurate with the effort, YOU ARE OK. Your identity is worth far more than whatever number is on that paper.

I printed this out and pasted on my desk. :lovesite: :goodpost:

Aww.... Thanks for the affirmation. We parents really need to stand by each other so we can better help and protect our children. I write also to remind myself about my commitment to my children. I can get so insane sometimes when the going gets tough. :grphug:
Wow, thanks for sharing. Didn't know it could be that bad...

I am also getting amazed at the kind of 'compo' the kids are asked to write in school. I couldn't believe DS could write such good Chinese, and sure enough, he said he was asked to copy someone else's work. But I went :? Why need to copy? If copy from friend means friend can write so well? If copy from teacher, then how are they expected to write one on their own (tested) in 2 weeks' time?
          I'm starting to scramble already.
When I first discovered that my DD2 was asked to copy a model Chinese essay, I was stunned. Plagiarism gets you a \"Failure\" grade immediately in university. The Chinese teacher pasted the model student's essay in my daughter's book and then asked her to copy word for word onto the next page. When I saw that, I called the teacher and told her I think it's against my morals and my stand against plagiarism. I refuse to let my child do it and I told the teacher that if the essay is not good enough, I'll let her do the essay again. No problem. The Teacher actually told me she was trying to save me time!!! I told I don't need to save this kind of time. I would rather my daughter learn that it is WRONG to copy someone's essay. We can use some clever phrasing demonstrated by someone, but we must still create the sentence ourselves.

Given the state of affairs in the schools, it's really no wonder character education & values are being called into attention. There's something seriously wrong. Our teachers don't know how to teach our potato children chinese and instead learning more refreshing methods, they resort to asking our children to copy!! :slapshead:

beanbear, I agree with you the kids shouldn't be made to copy the model answers. However, unlike you, not saying good or not, I usually hold back responding to the teachers so quickly, but to observe how it will help my kids, because frankly, I do not know if I would have a better way of teaching my kids.

If it does help in copying from model answers, then does that mean if they will be tested in 2 weeks' time, if my kid wants to do well, he should improve himself by copying more model answers? If children learn from copying in school, aren't they being taught to learn by copying? That's just duplicating other people's work instead of using the vocabs they already know to form the story in their own way, right? That's where the child looses out in developing thinking skills, and instead, start developing the idea that there's always a model answer somewhere for them, right? There is something really, really wrong about this education system..

How would you help your child, beanbear?

              Hi Concern2,

For short-term goals, I get my children to memorize phrases or sentences for Introductions & conclusions. We modify sample sentences we get from books. I get them to read Model Chinese Essays but more to get into the feel of how the language sounds. For English, my children listens to English Audio CDs every night as they go to bed. These are stories by Roald Dahl, Rudyard Kipling, Oscar Wilde, etc. I find that to be one of the best ways to pick up great phrases & grammar structures indirectly plus they get to hear accurate pronunciation of words!

You know your child’s ability best. What’s the progress you want to see for this coming test? I prefer to focus on the progress rather a specific mark or number. Based on the gaps my child demonstrated in the previous exam, we have been working towards plugging those gaps, so in the coming CA1, I expect to see those skills demonstrated in the exams.

I’ve actually focused more on Comprehension skills in the Language papers rather than essay writing. I feel there’s a greater chance for performing well in comprehension than composition. I’m taking a 6 month approach for composition and so letting that go for CA1. Comprehension- I’ve already started to see improvement from using Annotation techniques. Once the technique is applied, you can see immediate short-term improvements. DS1 used to fail in OE Comprehension, now he can score very well even for Chinese Comprehension. He annotates the entire Chinese passage into English and he was more able to answer the questions after that. I’ve told DS that once you are strong in the English Language, you can transfer similar skills to Chinese and apply similar techniques. Even his Chinese Teacher was impressed with what he did with the Chinese comprehension.

Maybe the Teacher was trying to get her to learn to write the words and phrases? Chinese being what it is… memory work is important. Tactile memory developed through hand movements and touch is important in achieving writing fluency for Chinese. DS had to ting xie a lot… and mo xie in order to be able to write-recall words well when doing compo.

I’m not sure… but maybe Teacher meant well.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!... This is wise. I had to close one eye to failing compos until we had read enough to get a feel of the language.

I do this too... It's less stressful for DS. Absolute numbers are less important than making improvements.

This supplementary issue at P6 is sticky…I remembered at end of P5, I asked son’s FT if P6 suppl is compulsory. She said some teachers are unhappy if kids do not attend.

I’ve emailed VP regarding this in Jan and explained the situation. She agreed my son can skip Thur classes but he will still take the worksheets and try to complete what was done during the suppl class.

When Parents tell Teachers how to teach...

When Teachers tell Parents how to discipline...
                      All hell breaks loose.
And the poor kid ends up more confused.
                      :?

PTM session could be used to iron out these differences, and improve on the communication between Teachers and Parents, Excluding the kid's presence.

Teachers in some primary schools can't seem to go the full length of helping kids to pass exams...if that's the case, what's the point of having parent-teacher meeting...it's more like 'Here, pls teach your child this. I can't, bcos I have a class of 40.'
I don't bring my kids for PTM sessions.
