Travel: Japan - General

Just to share. We hit the outlet today.
We managed to see part of Mt Fuji's peak on the bus. We took the JR gotemba bus from Shinjuku. It took alittle over 2 hours on our way up due to traffic jam. Coming back, it took around 3 hours again due to traffic situation. But we took the time to rest on the bus especially after so much walking for the past few days.
The outlet was packed with the locals. Gap had pretty good buys. Also managed to get coach stuff which happened to have 20% additional discount today though I still think US would have been better for that. We also managed to get samsonite laptop haversack that can double up as a school bag for kids at fairly good price. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves. Hubby thought he will be done in 30 mins but we did 6.5 hours instead.
We will be heading back home tomorrow.
Personally, I enjoyed Asakusa, Harajuku (for the interesting cosplay dress up and daiso 105 yen shop), Shinjuku area and Tsukiji market was rather interesting too as there was a very popular and great tasting noodle stall by the road side. It was also fun buying coupon and having udon noodle in the train station. Had to match the characters to ensure we are buying the right thing.
The Japanese just looked so well dressed all the time. Maybe it's the weather as well. Can't imagine doing all that in Singapore hot weather. But the teenagers are really an eye opener. They just set their own trends which their friends follow. I also came to a conclusion that most of the japanese ladies including teenage girls put on makeup (some are really thick to achieve the porcelain impact). Saw girls sitting in restaurants putting on make up and setting their hairstyle,etc.. dun really see that in Spore. Abit too \"vain\" for me to take it. -
Thanks for all the LIVE updates from Japan.
How I wish its Dec 1 now, then I’ll be closer to my departure date

MMM:
It's true - the Japanese, even the men, are probably the most well-groomed Asians. Even high school girls wear make up with uniform (to sch or not I'm not sure). The Japanese are trend-setters, and everyone else (Korea, Taiwan, Sg) copies them.

When you return to Singapore, you will probably feel that we in Sg are incredibly sloppy dressers. Of course, our weather does not help, but still... sloppiness is not good anyway.
Did you also notice the distinct lack of fat people as well as spectacles among the Japanese?

YES WE DID!!!

We came to a conclusion that the maybe it's due to the distance they have to walk between one platform to another (for train). Importantly, the flight of stairs they have to do everyday. Especially those long stairways (one after another :!: ). We gave up after the 4th day (we will look for the lift where possible). Also, taxi fare are expensive, so you are less likely to hop on a cab wherever you go. It's also not easy to find coke (carbonated soft drinks) (except in Macdonalds) most of the beverage choice are tea. So probably that helps too?
Hubby was suggesting that Spore govt should do away with the escalator to make sporeans exercise more.
As for the sloppy dresser, I've to attribute to the weather. If you were to wear in suit, etc... I think you will just melt the moment you step out under the sun.
I also like those small restaurants where you buy your food using coupons. Wonder if such will catch on in Spore (eg QB hair cut). But the japanese food quality to offer here must be as good and the price must also be reasonable. I missed the udon..... Anyone for this biz idea? -
Konibanwa/good evening!
CKS, was in Kyoto this afternoon - did see some red leaves but not as spectacular as I would have thought. Those of you travelling at a later date may have better luck.
As promised, here are some notes/tips taken during the trip for to-be travellers :-
1. Expect long queue (>30 mins to an hr) too in Osaka Universal Studio. If you are Universal Studio partner hotel guests, you will be able to have early entrance prior to public opening time - that helps! & yes, everything in Japanese even the shows ;-<Positive>200 jumps to-date) ... DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!
PS: Lots of spring water you can try to take from but go for the one with 3 pipes - straight from the mountain and yummy, refreshing! There are 3 pipes to take water from (representing wealth, health & wisdom) but Japanese believe you need to choose only to drink from 2 of them in order for your wishes to be effective - - well, can't be too greedy
My boy chose WEALTH without 2nd thoughts and asked me immediately after - when is he going to see his money? :!:
4. If you want to wear kimono, pls make sure you wear your LEFT over RIGHT. The other way of wearing is meant for the dead.
5. Be impressed with the advanced toilet seats !! The seats are warm (literally with a temperature!) and it comes with spray function to wash your buttocks while seated and the higher class type comes with massage function! Boy, Japanese must be a stressed lot that they need such comfort to do their \"business\"
But kudos to them, very creative!
PS: My kid's favourite place he declared was the toilet seat ... to-date (beats Universal Studio hands down
)
6. FOOD ...
(a) Japanese word TANG (1)/'soup' means warm water.
(b) Buy their sakae - cold/warm drink from their supermarket - - gosh only 204 yen !
(c) Heatpad - i read earlier that it was cheaper to buy in Japan. I never check out the rate but the pack of 10 that I just bought (lasting 12 hrs) cost me 348 yen.
(d) Must try their raw food eg Sashimi this time of the year when it's cold- - freshest!
That's all for now, folks ... -
Not sure why my msg was cut-off in the middle :x

Us: Yeah, us too.
