One school subscribes good materials and others not?

Why all the kids can't treat equally?
Actually, if given a choice, I'd rather not spend money on any subscriptions. Or let me decide myself what I want to subscribe for the kids. Don't want all these mags piling up in the house. Worse case is newspapers subscription (LRD or Big Thumb or Comma), I end up having 2 copies of ST or Zaobao from my kids in diff schools!!

Sometimes the teachers would use the (subscribed) materials in class but from my experience, that's not usually the case.

I heard the LRD is a good one, I can't order by myself, means ST website mentioned parents can order through school only.

I agree with u, but in the same region, different schools approach differently.eg: two kids equally have the family background and say same strength go to different schools, one go to lousy school and one go to better school. The better school's child treat better, isn't it?

From my ecxperience before he enter the school the parents nither exposed nor kiasu. After he entered the school they has totally changed. The t give tips and what is the next year syllabus and teach in the June holiday. For my son's school if I asked them to call me the will call after three weeks. Some teachers don't attend the phone calls. My son refused to show his pupil diary as he scared of teachers. So I cannot get their emails. Next week exam parents not sure which topics come for exams.some schools so helpful and others not. So every child doesn't treat equally.

Why MOE Control all schools instead of principals?

The Ministry Of Education directs the formulation and implementation of education policies. It has control of the development and administration of the Government and Government-aided primary schools, secondary schools, junior colleges, and a centralised institute. It also registers private schools.

What do you mean by this? Care to elaborate?

Why all the kids can't treat equally?

Every child is different. Children develop differently, have different personalities, possess different strengths and require different kinds of support to meet their individual needs.[/quote]

            Hi champ!

For entering in certain primary school the kids no need to pass any exam . Then how the school decide this material is not suitable for their kids.esp the newspaper no harm for any kids. CCA, why our kids cannot take their desired one, cos of the school doesn’t have.Is it all the kids give same opportunity to learn and excel.

The school only starts to decide the different materials for different kids after streaming happens. Prior to that, the cohort gets the same things. So it depends on when school starts streaming. Some schools may even stream a small group in P1 to focus on something, so it is hard to pinpoint as MOE does not decide the streaming age. Having said this, Chenonceau has been asking for MOE to set some systemic approach to cut down the non-standard practices across all schools. For CCA, it also varies from school to school I believe. In my school, some CCAs has competitive versus recreational, eg gym and some CCAs only completely competitive eg, dance. This is already considered an acceptable compromise for us considering there is always a constraint of resources on school's side. Perhaps some schools with more constraint will only focus on competitive teams. I am not saying this is correct practice or not, just that there is a wide variation of practices in schools now. I believe MOE is probably struggling between empowerment and standardisation, where to strike the balance. My gut says go with empowerment but collect all the best practices for standardisation across the schools and review school practices often to render better support.

To add on for CCA, some schools also have parents who are more willing to pay so these schools have no problem getting in external vendors to provide certain enrichment CCAs.

                      smartmummy,

                      there are alternatives.
when my boy does not have access to LRD last year, we were prepared to fork out money to subscribe to Today or MyPaper for that additional enrichment reading. ended up, we let him read Straits Times Online after the grandparents who are Straits Times subscribers told us about the promotional subscription they were having.

when my boy’s sch did not subscribe to Chinese magazine last year, i went to buy fortnightly copies off the newstand too.

for CCA-wise that one really depends on luck. even if the sch has the CCA that your kid wants to join, sometimes, they only cherrypick potential students to fill in the limited vacancies.
