MOE has been sleeping all these years, and it still thinks it is world class. MOE management was busy getting Teachers to serve that it forgot that they need to serve the Teachers too.
Totally agree with you that MOE need to serve the TEACHERS too. These days, I have been hearing from my friends who are in the teaching profession that they need to go back to school in the evening for the night study program. I wondered what are the working hours for teachers NOW. Principals/MOE are expecting more and more. Teachers also have their kids and family to take care of. Their own kids need to take exam too.

It's easy to squeeze teachers. They have no power.

Sharing is of course good. Just that i feel it is not fair to teachers who have spent time and effort to come up with the resources.

MOE will not come up with the resource materials. Their reasons: Each school is different with their own strength and weaknesses. So the best is for the school teachers to prepare their own.

            Oh Piggy...

That is why we must speak up. Fair or not to the Teachers, the system is inefficient. Resources are stuck... the flowthrough is not smooth. This goes beyond individual teachers. If all teachers want to have an easier life, then sharing saves everyone time and effort. There are ways to reward sharing so that Teachers will feel good.

MOE WILL NOT? Maybe they won't, but unless we speak up as Mothers of this country, they really WILL not. We must speak up so that there is a chance they might.

Why should we take MOE's \"no\" lying down? Why should we be so compliant and so gullible that when people say cannot, it is really cannot. In the early days, people said Singapore cannot make it. But we did. Where did our spirit go? If we didn't speak up about healthcare, HDB flats and elderly folks, the budget WILL NOT look like what it looks like today.

We must speak up for education too because our children depend on us.

If efficient sharing can be done, that will be good. However, I dont think it is too tough for each school to come up with their own set of resource materials too. Sorry to say that, I would think that some schools are just more hardworking than the others. If parents like ourselves can find out which are good assessment books or guides or even come out with our own ways to help our children, I believe in all schools, there are teachers who are capable of writing good resource materials. It is just that whether these teachers find it worth to spend the time and effort to prepare them.

Alright Piggy, you win. I am tired. No offense to you but if you disagree with the notion of sharing... and you deny that talent lies along a bell curve and believe that people like Ammiel Wan (author of Onsponge), ex-HOD of Catholic High are a dime a dozen in the MOE, then well... we can just agree to disagree.

That is why we must speak up. Fair or not to the Teachers, the system is inefficient. Resources are stuck... the flowthrough is not smooth. In addition, like I said, as a consultant, I had to share. I wrote the stuff and other countries in Asia picked up and used. At regional meets, they would approach me and say \"Hey, I found that useful, and it's great to see your face finally.\" It makes you feel like some sort of celebrity...

What's so unfair about that? This goes beyond individual teachers. If all teachers want to have an easier life, then sharing saves everyone time and effort.

The best people to SPEAK UP are the HODS and THE PRINCIPALS. I do not understand why they are not speacking up and pushing all the teachers to do the wayang with them andat the same time demand the teachers to produce good PSLE or 'O' level results.

Because they need their jobs and they are afraid of sanction. Because if they speak up, they may not get promoted. Because if they don't get promoted, their families will also suffer with them. Good enough reasons to stay silent when the higher ups claim we have a world class system. We should not push it to them to speak up.

Everyone is invested in the system. Parents have children there. Teachers, HODs and Principals work there. We all must speak up and do our part. It isn't just the HOD and Principals' problem. I know Principals who do speak up for other issues. It isn't as if they get listened to.

But it's ok Piggy, I don't expect everyone to agree with me. I can understand that you might be very happy with your experience of the educational system and your kids have had no major issues with it. It does happen, and there is nothing wrong with that.

We need a list for all school to follow up. Parent's choice to buy or not. Our parents (we) , even very poorest people willing to spend money for education. The books are cheaper than compare to entrichment .

I think instead of fixing textbooks per se, put a list of relevant and good resources recommendation in the booklist and make it optional. Good resources also mean it comes with high cost (IIRC, there is a resource that cost $32) and then after that many parents will cry that education is so expensive and then it will kill the spirit of change again.

I know a few schools have put in Science guide books into their P3 - P6 book list.

[/quote]Yes I agree some schools do that so hopefully MOE can urge ALL schools to do that in a systemic way. Like what smart mummy mentioned, parents will invest to buy anyway so keep as an option empowers parents to decide and be involved in their kids' education as opposed to hurriedly rush to tuition centres or tutors.

Chenon dear, don’t feel tired. I believe the idea of sharing resources is an agreeable one but the implementation is to be discussed. What piggy says is true too, getting teachers to share what they hv prepared is an uphill task. Perhaps there should be a curriculum team in MOE, not just discussing framework n give guidelines to schools only but detail content sharing. For MOE to invest in content is a given. For MOE to protect their investment of their content is also a must since tuition is so lucrative in SG. However I am sure there is a way around this but takes longer. If MOE does not want to go big in content development, at least use the curriculum team to research on good materials available in the market to be put into the book list as options for purchase. For mandatory ones, work on a subsidy with publishers for bulk book purchase to ensure all children get at least decent mandatory textbooks.
