Child Underperforms Because Tested Above Cognitive Level

Not what I would describe as 'prepared'...he hasn't touched any CA1 paper at all. That is what worries me. Finishing school hw daily is an accomplishment already. :imdrowning:

CCA is compulsory in my kids’ school. Even at P1, kids are required to stay back for some form of modular CCA for 12 weeks (they put up a mini performance after that).


However, recreational sports no longer exists. All sports CCA are by selection only, and the trials are completed by mid-P2 (!!) I wonder how they access a child’s inclination for volleyball, or badminton, by this age. Uniformed Groups’ recruitment is not competitive, I believe. Even the Aesthetic Groups, I believe, are by selection only. Hmm.

Hmm. My P6 DS is still attending 2 CCA (maths & sports) + some additional programmes - Eng Literacy Club & Olympiad Maths, W3 cluster etc. and seriously, he's been sleeping after 11pm daily since this month, sometimes after 12am

Tried to persuade him to drop the CCAs but he wants to continue & claim Sch told P6s all CCA will end by term 1 for them. So I endure & monitor for another few weeks.

I'm doing something that contradicts myself - telling myself to allow mys on to go easy on CA1 but yet my migraine is acting up bcos I don't want him to do too badly for it. :stupid: It's driving me crazy.

Janet... I know how you feel. CA1's first paper is today. He hasn't touched his books since 13th Feb. I worry but he worries more than me so I had to talk to him last night and tell him that CA1 is a throwaway exam. I don't expect him to do well because he hasn't really had time to sink in what he has learnt. We covered all of P6 syllabus in January but no time to properly internalize. Nonetheless, I believe all of P6 syllabus will be tested.

DS is still worried because amongst his friends, he doesn't want to lose face. He explained last night \"When you are top in class, the other children don't tease you anymore. People never tease the top students.\" Oh well... it's a good occasion to build character if he does badly and gets some ribbing. Haha.

Math Olympiad is a CCA? I've never considered that a CCA... together with english literacy club. I wouldn't allow DS to join those because it's like MORE SCHOOL. To me CCA contributes nothing to academic results. If Math Olympiad is a CCA, then my son has 2 now.

But I realise my definition of CCA may be too narrow now that I read your sharing.

Silly isn't it? Cut throat competition at age 8... It's the law of the jungle in our schools.

Yes...same here...tell my son to do what he can for CA1 although this paper doesn't mean much...besides, I know schools will set tough papers to WAKE kids.

At P6...I think the whole focus should be shifted to something MORE important than CAs and SAs. We have been terrorised for 5 years.

The end goal is the PSLE - don't let the bumps along the way detract or stymie your sight towards the end of the tunnel!
