If my standard very high, I would have died vomiting blood!! He's the baseline king in GEP....better than Bjorn Borg!!! :rotflmao:
Your DS didn't think he did well but got selected. His and/or your standards must be very high.
But high is good lah... if he is gifted then it's good to stretch him.
Didn't really know what they test for these selections coz he always didn't seem to remember!!!! :rotflmao:
Only remember he as very dejected after the 1st selection test...so we could only tell him he tried and did his best already...leave the rest up to Him lor.

Comparing to our school days, I thought our children actually do have access to a wider range of resources (in terms of what's available in bookshops like Popular). Of course, it is not always straight forward to identify the suitable resource (guidebook or assessment books) for different kids as it will really depend on his ability and needs. Hence we see school teachers or tutors making use of some of these resources. Are you suggesting that it would be great for teachers to make recommendations to parents as it is not always easy for all parents to know which to choose? And the issue is not so much about \"having access to the same database\", right? sorry, if I still miss it after so many of your posts about this.Chenonceau:
If all students have access to the same database of resources then you wouldn't worry.
I suggest
(1) an e-database where teachers can upload their worksheets and others can download what teachers have written... from model compos... to model CL oral... to cloze etc... So that Teachers don't have to ask students to contribute their tuition materials before they can teach well. This is Teacher Support.
(2) better teaching and testing policy
(3) more comprehensive textbooks
(4) a policy of subject specialization for EMS because the content of all 3 is now so challenging even adults have problems mastering all 3 subjects together
What you seem to be suggesting is that everything should be fine right now because Popular has everything you need. So, just go and buy from Popular. Not everyone has the money to buy. Also Teachers should not have to buy their own resources/assessments and all that to teach with eh? Or perhaps schools already have a book budget for Teachers? Probably they have.
If the stated principle of Singapore education is that education is a leveller and largely free, then we should not have to pay for these materials. If, however, that principle has changed and that education now is no longer a social leveller, then MOE should come right out and say it. \"People who have money will get a better education. So... if you have money, send your kids to Learning Lab, who can be given the status of fully private school, and you don't need MOE permission to go there.\"
Right now, it is neither here nor there. -

yes wonderm, actually that was what I wrote as I find it quicker and more doable than waiting for a big content database to be built. The birth of an idea of a central resource is all Chenon's. The suggestion is to make it as an option inside the booklist for all recommended resources and implement across ALL SCHOOLS. Now selected schools are doing this on their own, so just asking for a systemic approach in line with Chenon's vision.[/quote]ksi, thanks! same thoughts here :hugs:

I was thinking how is it possible for MOE include a list of recommended resources since there are so many in the market and more coming out all the time. A good resource for one may not be ideal for another child. It would have to be a very long list to be fair, and then parents would be confused still? It maybe more practical for teacher to advise the parents (of a specific child or class) which are good and appropriate resource.
In any case, all the best to those of you having PSLE kids this year! Hang on there, things will get much better once the children are in Sec schools. -

Actually ksi is asking for a list of recommended resources, which you don't think necessary because not possible for schools to do that. So... really, your position is that everything is perfectly fine and we really should not complain?

Hi chen & ksi, why not create thread here with a list of the very best books for P1 to PSLE available in popular or any bookstores so that all parents can benefit from your rich knowledge and experience?
