MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni
-
Don’t panic, Mr Heng promised more good schools. At one time I tot he said tat all schools are the same. So now got good and bad schools, how so?
It amazed me tat he is able to produe more good schools, how so?
All these years I chose to believe tat schools are all equal but some are more equals. Some are destined to be feeder schools to IP or Expressed, whereas some are feeder to N or ITE.
If this is true is it an easy task to make bad school into good school. -

MOE reviewing is to finalise by coming 2012 Registration?
:yikes: :yikes: :yikes:
Think all the school administrators will also sweat over this if changes are annouced closed to June and then supposed to be implemented this year. -
Before I start, both my kids are already schooling or passed the P1 registration. So below comments is just for those who are still cracking their brain to turn their disadvantage to advantage.
The last pg is pg 30+, and still reading pg 8, already think there is so many talking to their own advantage because they think they are disadvantaged, in other words, talking rubbish just because they feel they are disadvantage. I personally feel that current regulations is sufficient, except to further improve the Singaporean (higher than PR and foreigner), PR (higher than foreigner) and foreigner.
Even if it is going to put proximity as a higher priority, (maybe this time round should cut to 500m, 1km, 1.5km, 2km), they should set rules like must stay in close proximity 5 years before P1 and 5 years after just like the HDB selling rule. If they move house, the poor boy will have to transfer or pay penalty of x% of the price of the house sold. This may (or maybe not) help to control property sky-rocket as there will not be so many house to sell due to the 5 years after rule.
Came to know there are some who make use of Grandparents address, some even God-Father/Mother’s address and all sorts of funny things people can think of.
Tell me honestly, how many after kids getting into the school, disappear from PV, start not going to church, not involve in Grassroot anymore, move house out of the area, etc? Answer is, Many.
I believe there are people who are sincere to serve and there are some just to fulfill whatever system put in place, be it PV, Grassroot, Clan, Church or Alumni (active) or Alumni (sleeping). Like the 5 years after house rule, these people should also serve say 5 years in the school clocking certain number of hours. They will be let go only in P6 to have time to concentrate on PSLE with their child.
For me, my DS got into my school in P2A2. After DS got into the school, both my wife and me started to PV in the school from P1 to P6, willing to help the school and DS, together we grow. I am still in the PV now even DS is now Sec 2 in the same school.
So the question here is how many serve with heart or serve with a purpose in mind.
Not all Alumni want to bring their kids to their own school as not all have positive feeling towards their own school. Some, if not most, definitely not all alumni, who still have strong feeling of their the school (active or sleeping) they have attended and truly wish their kids to have the same education. They just want what benefit themselves to benefit their own children from the culture and traditions of the school. And mind you, it is not the end when you kid get into a good, whether they will make it in school will still strongly depend on your kid (you know your own kid well), your support for your kid and your close support for the school and maybe even tuition. Also know of kids who got into "popular" school, but pull their kid out few months into P1 because their kid cannot take the pressure. Some are advice to transfer after given a chance to retain in certain level. This can cause even more hurt to the kid involved. Going to a "good" school does not always mean your kid will have a "good" ending.
Think what I say may offend many, but I am just stating truth and fact, just my 2 cents worth. Please do not flame me. -

By the way, Moderator, I thought I have read the article as "Connected" and not "Alumni", being in Church, Clan, etc are also "Connected".
Would think that the title of this Thread should be changed!!! -
3Boys:
Janet Lee's point was that pride in sending a child to an alma mater is justification for alumni priority. For something as important as P1 admission, where is the logic that 'pride' becomes the biggest factor in gaining priority admission? That ihat I am challenging.
Some can never understand about pride of your own alma mater. But not forgetting there are those who certainly have loads of pride for their own alma mater. These groups (some again) have gathering even till today. Not once a year but on several occassion. Some feel so proud of own school still goes back during the teachers' day and some go to the extend of inviting their retired teachers to their own gathering. I don't know about others. I feel very proud of my own alma mater, so much so that i contributed actively right from the time i graduated from uni.
What has pride got to do with this? Nope, it works for only SOME Singaporeans. Many others are disenfranchised. As I said in an earlier post, the foreigner factor should no be used as a smokescreen to propagate the alumni priority scheme, for the far greater number of affected are Singaporeans.3Boys:
Parents are proud when they can send their kids back to their former schools...this is the beauty of being a singaporean born and bred here. this will fall under phase 2A.
Just like MM Lee Kuan Yew mentioned at a public event that he sent his 3 children : Prime Minister BG Lee Hsien Loong, former SingTel CEO BG Lee Hsien Yang and Dr Lee Wei Ling to Nanyang Primary School. And that five out of his seven grandchildren also went to Nanyang Primary School.
He likes the school's values and way of teaching young kids.
That is what pride called. Called it unfairness for those who can't get into non-alma mater, but that is life. Life still goes on as it is not the end of the day. -

JonC, there's a lot of truth in your post & I agree. I :salute: you for still doing PV even after your kid has left the Sch. That's the true spirit of alumni. I too will not be affected & my only support is for sibling priority......imagine those without alumni connections with a few kids, spare a thot for them.
As for other types of priorities, need tweaking. For foreigners, guess having less priority for them is fine, but let's not make it soooo difficult for them too. After all, they are parents like many of us here.
As for proximity, agree with u....many are going thru loopholes. As for pv work, think hard to implement mandatory service years - what can Sch do if the parents insist no time, kick the child out? And if they dun serve with their heart, this group will also be making lotsa noise.

:goodpost: that is what i called a true blue active alumni. Well done.

BTW, get your DS to do it with you and your wife. It is alot of fun doing it as a family. -
I am still have very strong feeling about Singaporean and foreigners.
My grandparents came to Singapore, they work and contributed towards what Singapore is today, so do my parents and so does myself (and also serve NS and completed reservists), many like me, don’t you think we deserve more the a PR or foreigner who just came in and wanted to share or even replace us to get into Shade under the tree planted by my grandparents, grow by my parents and taking good care by me.
And to make things worst, some of these people after some years, making good fortune from the fruits of our fore-fathers, have not heart to take root here, just go back to their homeland with all the fruits harvested from here.
