MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni
-
I am still have very strong feeling about Singaporean and foreigners.
My grandparents came to Singapore, they work and contributed towards what Singapore is today, so do my parents and so does myself (and also serve NS and completed reservists), many like me, donβt you think we deserve more the a PR or foreigner who just came in and wanted to share or even replace us to get into Shade under the tree planted by my grandparents, grow by my parents and taking good care by me.
And to make things worst, some of these people after some years, making good fortune from the fruits of our fore-fathers, have not heart to take root here, just go back to their homeland with all the fruits harvested from here. -
In reality... Nothing is free.
Who has the \"right\" to claim for this priority?
In my view, Anyone who had put in effort and worked for it...
1. Alumni... Cos' of your parent's effort to put you in the sch
2. Teacher/staff of same sch... Cos' you work for it
3. Siblings... Cos' of your effort to put your eldest kid in the sch
4. Associations/Church/Grassroots... Cos' of your effort to clock in hours and contribute to society voluntarily
5. Staying nearby or buy property... Cos' of your effort to relocate, or work for the $$$
Who has the \"right\" to make noise?
In my view, any1 who has done above... But not successful/eligible.
Regardless how much your property is worth (still $$ from hard work)
Regardless how long you served/contributed (it is voluntary work)
Or Teachers/staff in different sch...
Who doesn't has the \"right\" to make noise?
In my view, any1 who hasn't done above yet complain when they got balloted out in Phase 2C.

The thread creator trying to sensationalize the thread....By the way, Moderator, I thought I have read the article as \"Connected\" and not \"Alumni\", being in Church, Clan, etc are also \"Connected\".
Would think that the title of this Thread should be changed!!!

I think the present system of Pri 1 allocation is quite fair, but some loopholes should be removed.
For instance, I have heard of parents (both local and PR) buying uncompleted properties within 1km of "good schools", using that address to apply for the school, but planning (right fr day one) to rent out the property when its TOPs.
And I feel that parents who have already done volunteer work to put their child in the school should be allowed to enter the school. That said, is perhaps unavoidable that sometimes schools will miscalculate the number of vacancies it has for this phase. So perhaps schools should give places to the children of PV who have put in the most number of hours. So say, for instance, the school anticipates that there will be 40 places for PVs. It allows 40 parents to do PV work for the year before the child applies for Pri 1. The school can stipulate say 40h, but encourage PV to do more. And say if, at the application date, the school only finds 30 vacancies, then it gives these 30 vacancies to the 30 PV with the highest number of volunteer hours clocked in, while the remaining 10 PVs will have to ballot.
I think a forum like this is great to throw up different ideas - because we can all point of the pros & cons of these ideas. Some will take an personal, selfish viewpoint, while other will take an altruistic, balanced, longer term viewpoint. For the former, I say, becareful what you wish for because sometimes you get your wish - and it turns out to have quite unpleasant side-effects. -

for the pv, each school should have a max of maybe 20 places (to ensure all who served gets a place).
it should not be up to the school to select pvs or on a first come first serve basis or only those living within 1km can apply. it should be opened to all and balloting is the way to go (no argument as to how selection is done). -
Laura02:
Parents who have sweated out getting 40/80 hours done should be given due credit by allowing the kids to get into the school. These parents served the school directly. It's only fair.
