MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni

huh, 500 hours.......wow  and many parents were unable to even complete 40 hours because of lack of opportunities. The tracking of hours is already been done at some schoolS. Someone I know was told upfront when she signed for PV that the top PV clocked more than 500 hours and eventually her child was given a place in the school.
cant help but wonder was the place given automatically to her or did this top pv need to go thru the whole balloting process (unless there was none for those within 1km and she lived within 1km).

No, this group definitely not \"cham\" and no need to complain. In fact, this group is the BEST! Why? Because totally rely on the good government to take care of us. Go into a good neighbourhood school, study hard, climb up the avenues provided, reach your goals and eventually be a good citizen who contributes in society! But those balloted out in P2C, some also cham leh, when try all avenues but still \"fail\"
Apply PV, not selected
Apply grassroots, not successful
No $$$ to relocate closer to school of desire
Not same religion, not same dialect grp
Alma mater no more or not belong to top/branded
This group can complain or not?
:siam:
:imcool:
I have none of the above and my mother is illiterate. Dunoo what is mission school just sent all of us siblings into a neighbourhood school. We did not turn out too badly and I have never felt disadvantaged at all throughout my life. Instead very grateful for the educational system to enable me to reach my fullest potential. Then grateful to the economy in giving me a job to provide for my family.

Besides such sentimental sentiments, i thought the top priority is also SECURITY? So all family members go to that school. And I presume security must be very tight! Not any Tom, Dick and Harry can go. Give me I also don't want to go. Very stressed don't you think? We are just ordinary folks. Let the very top have their own special and secured place while they concentrate on building the nation.

Some can never understand about pride of your own alma mater. But not forgetting there are those who certainly have loads of pride for their own alma mater. These groups (some again) have gathering even till today. Not once a year but on several occassion. Some feel so proud of own school still goes back during the teachers' day and some go to the extend of inviting their retired teachers to their own gathering. I don't know about others. I feel very proud of my own alma mater, so much so that i contributed actively right from the time i graduated from uni.
Just like MM Lee Kuan Yew mentioned at a public event that he sent his 3 children : Prime Minister BG Lee Hsien Loong, former SingTel CEO BG Lee Hsien Yang and Dr Lee Wei Ling to Nanyang Primary School. And that five out of his seven grandchildren also went to Nanyang Primary School.
He likes the school's values and way of teaching young kids.
That is what pride called. Called it unfairness for those who can't get into non-alma mater, but that is life. Life still goes on as it is not the end of the day.
Nanyang is Nanyang today all becoz of the efforts of these ppl!!
during my time my alma mater was just a small \"unknown\" primary school in the east but over the years they started producing top students and now.. its one of the top primary school in the east... !!!
its definitely not by chance or by luck these schools are so well sought after now..you cant definitely wipe out the contributions of us the ex students.. !!! -

G'night all! -
At the risk of being labelled as proud/elitist, I am indeed proud of my old school and had very fond memories while studying there. My aunt and cousin sisters studied there too so I expect my daughter to attend the same school. Why not? It is the same as some people who insist on using a certain car brand because of their familiarity and trust in it. Please don't penalise alumni members. Not all connections are negative.
The popular primary schools are popular because of their churning top PSLE results and/or affiliation to popular secondary schools. If we really, really want to benefit our children, MOE should take the plunge and remove PSLE in turn removing all the unnecessary competition and distress (although of course we know it's important in meritocratic Singapore and that may never happen in my lifetime). Or URA or some other authority can step in and force some of the popular schools to relocate out of the Bt Timah enclave to heartlands all over Singapore so that many more kids can attend such schools. To this day, I really don't understand why so many schools are being squeezed into that Newton-Dunearn-Bt Timah area (pushing property prices sky-high and causing massive traffic jams). Shouldn't there be a quota on number of schools in any district :?
Anyway, regarding the abolishment of the Phase 2A alumni bit, it would be interesting to hear what some of our ministers have to say, especially if their parents and grandparents were previously from schools like ACS and MGS. I'm positive they would want to continue the tradition of their descendents attending the same schools. Perhaps they should really lead by example and send their own kids to neighbourhood primary schools, especially since there are many good ones around although not 'branded'. Walk the talk.
Just my personal thoughts. No intention to offend anyone. -

To some perhaps which i don't understand but really it doesn't make sense to me.

Afterall, PSLE is not the end of the world. I \"feel\" alot for my alma mater not because of security but rather i feel belong and i feel a sense of deep pride and because it has in a way builds my character and i still stand by the motto and therefore i want my children to feel or experience my experiences. -
Her child was balloted out but she went on the 'waitlist' and when someone withdraw eventually, she was given priority. In fact, this person I know who is doing PV now for the school doesn't even live within 2km of this popular school and is counting on 'history repeating itself' if she gets ballot out (if she even gets a chance to ballot to begin with!)

I am proud of my old school...so it makes perfect sense for my daughter (since I have one) to go back to the school again. My daughter is studying there & when I see former classmates whose daughters are also studying there, we have a chance to yak about old times. It's a wonderful feeling. At the risk of being labelled as proud/elitist, I am indeed proud of my old school and had very fond memories while studying there.
