All About Autism

schweppes:
Schwepeps,
DAN stands for \"Defeat Autism Now\". It's an organisation that has activities and experts to advice parents what to do. There are some doctors (very small group, i believe) who are trained in the DAN protocol (or method). I'm not sure who are the doctors here as I don't go to them)helplessmum3:
What is DAN ? If huge cost I can't .
It's ok if you do not see a DAN doctor. there are many other ways to help your son. Maybe for a start, you can give him multi-vitamins and supplements like calcium and magnesium, and fish oil. As he is very young, he may not be able to swallow pills or capsules so buy the liquid type. U can go to the pharmacy (Watson or Guardian) to get them.helplessmum3:
For a start, maybe let your son go to the speech therapists or OT at KKH or Health Promotion Board. They are just as good. If you have polyclinic referral, the costs are heavily subsidised. So it makes it more affordable. Don't have to go to a private SLT or OT for the time being. If go SLT per week if cost 100 , one month already need to comE out 400...bleeding ..
One disadvantage is the long waiting time at KKH or HPB. But even with the long waiting time, at least they will eventually see your child and help him.
Don't worry too much about what toys to get in Toys R Us, especially if you can't find selected ones.
Some toys that you can introduce your child can be bought at our markets or Fairprice. For example, those \"masak masak\" cooking set, ball (which you can throw/ roll to your son and he throws/ rolls them back to u), read simple story books, playdoh, playground (this is really one of the best and free therapy tool).
As for the puzzles, you and your husband can take turns to play and talk to you child, help him to fix the puzzles together.
YOu really make things easy for me to understand.. Thanks!!
i already hav OT appointment in Mar but not the speech therapy.
my son like drawing board, he loves us write or draw things to him and ask him to say it.. will tats works? -
why kWh pd never recommend us supplement? so bad of them, is it need to ask the psychologist?

the psychologists and therapists are unlikely to recommend supplements. Bio med or supplements/ enzymes therapy is considered alternative therapy (not traditional therapy). also the psychologist and therapist are not trained in those areas so do not feel comfortable to recommend to parents
For info, examples of traditional therapy are OT, SLT, ABA, sound therapy. -

That's fantastic and a good start.

Yes, drawing is good. ASD kids are very visual people - this means that they like pictures/ graphics/ diagrams. It helps them to understand.
Drawing is a way for him to express himself. Soemtimes asd kids who find difficulty speaking (or have speech delay) are able to communicate better thru drawing or artwork.
Talk to him abt what he is drawing. He may not be able to tell u. That's ok. U talk to him instead. U can also draw on another paper and talk about what u are drawing. It's ok if u are not an artist. Even stick figures are good enough.
Another way is to use picture story books - books with a lot of colorful pictures and talk to your son about what is happening in those stories.
For example, a picture can show a man kicking a ball. U can say, \"see the man is kicking the ball. Son (ur son's name), do you like to play ball? Mommy and daddy can bring u to play ball.\" something like that.
Another picture can show a mother cooking. Then u can say, \"son, see the lady cooking. just like mommy. mommy cooks for u. what do u like to eat? mommy will cook your favorite food. do u like chicken porridge. Yummm... nice chicken porridge\".
something like that. don't have to be complicated talk or telling stories. just simple ones that is good enough for both of u. the most important thing is that he is happy to spend time with u and can feel your love
:snuggles: -
helplessmum3:
Everyday I can feel my son is telling me..,
\"pls don't give up on me, I'm trying my best to work it out\"
I still can't control my tears well..
This shows that you have a good bond or relationship with your son. He is telling u to be strong and not to give up. It's ok to grieve, be sad, cry, get angry, feel frustrated and be afraid.
But it is not ok to think like that all the time.
You must also tell yourself that you cannot grieve, be sad, get angry, feel frustrated and be afraid forever. You will need to pick yourself up. Sometimes you will wonder and ask yourself where are u going to find the strength and how to carry on.
But you will somehow find the strength to do so. You have to... for your son's sake...helplessmum3:
I wish i have an answer for you. I also wonder why these things happen. But I also believe that things happen for a reason and it's up to us to discover what that is.They are so innocent y must God bring this to them. Im not sad tat I hav to suffer n lost so much money.. I just feel so pitiful of my son as he dun deserve these
What u must know and tell yourself is that, this is NOT a punishment. It's not because u did something bad or ate something wrong or that you are a bad person. Please do not think like that.
It's difficult now, i know. There are so many questions and so much uncertainties. But take each day one step at a time. Everyday is a new day, a new beginning that things will slowly improve.
The important thing is to always believe and never lose hope that he will GET BETTER!!

We only did the hair test for heavy metals. Didn't do the others as it sounded complicated and :moneyflies: :moneyflies: .Hi schsweppes,
I agreed that the B2B lady is very helpful. She was the first person who answered my thread which i posted it somewhere else. She shared a lot with me in her email.
I'm skeptical on analyzing the tests ourselves. Are u referring to the hair, stool, urine and blood (IgG) test? Given that we are not equipped with any medical knowledge and proper equipments, how are we suppose to interpret and analyze the test results ourselves?
Actually i wanted to try chelation (i'm more towards AC chelation rather than DAN chelation) and i understand that is the last stage of the DAN protocol. My girl started to regress after her MMR, hence i believe that its the combination of vaccinations which led to her present conditions. As much as i wanted to give homeopathy a try as it is a safer and natural approach as compared to biomed unfortunately there's no homeopathy docs specializing in autism in Singapore.
So after finding out that my kid was high in heavy metals, i started the detox such as chlorophyll and cilantro. As these are herb based, I was slightly less worried.
But do note that there is the \"healing crisis effect\". For her, it resulted in loose stools and runny nose (green thick mucus).
I didn't see any DAN doctors as we were all tired of going to another doctor or therapist for more diagnosis. Hard truth is also no time and :moneyflies: :moneyflies: :moneyflies:
So i decided to do my own research and read widely, and talk to B2B lady. The Karen Felice books were my \"bibles\" too... i constantly refer to them as a guide and to get an idea.
However, I must also qualify that my child was abt 12yo at that time when she was on ET, so a little easier to administer as she was older.
For kids who are pre-schoolers or below 9yo, then best to get the age appropriate ones. Kirkman Labs have supplements and enzymes specially formulated for young kids.
If u feel uncomfortable or uneasy, then don't do it yet. Trust your mother's instinct. There is a right time and place for everything. Alternatively, can start on the usual off-the-shelf supplements like multi-vits, trace minerals, fish oil (Nordic Natural or Efamol) and probiotics.
In my case, my kid had already gone thru SLT, OT and sound/music therapy. At that time, I felt very strongly that ET was another puzzle or missing link to help complete the picture, which is to help my child recover. But don't go into it blindly. Read as much as u can to understand more.
As mentioned earlier, there is a right time and place. Learn to listen to your gut feel. -
This is a serious thread so naturally a lot of serious sharing.
But we need to laugh at ourselves too. Cannot be doom and gloom all the time.
So... on a more light-hearted note, want to share this with the parents here on how I help my dd with hand-eye coordination. I made her pluck my white hair. I bought a tweezer and told her that she has to pluck my white hair. Must say that it has helped with her hand-eye coordination. :imcool:
Sad truth is that as I have more white hair now :gloomy: :gloomy: ... and am now at a dilemma. Get dd to pluck white hair to improve her hand-eye skills?? Or become botak at the end of it all :yikes: :yikes:
