MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni
-
I think there is a high tendency for locals to link priority given to citizens and alumni issue because there is no clear objectives/ principles / directions given from MOE on matter of registration. Nothing has been stated by the minister so far, right? Hence people are still casting doubts, and basing their judgements on what they see happening around them.
Once this preference on citizen is out of the question, alumni or not becomes easier and clearer - at least it will be for me. -
Singaporeans and PRs have been lumped together for all sort of statistics when they should be clearly separated… This includes education, employment numbers, housing, etc… How many of you feel ‘at home’ when you are out and about, whether on the train, bus or in the shopping malls, hands up? We are fast becoming ‘extinct’ in our own country!

What abt the sec school? MOE kinda chased them from their original site and I doubt they ever rebuild the school premises....maybe used it once or twice as a holding school site....now it's taken over by some Intl school.
Sad to say, Swiss Cottage was merged with another school.
I had a great time there...if it's still around, I would register my son in that school. Lovely school and lovely principal.
And isn't it quite a big site where it used to house both pri and sec schools? -

I 'Kee Chiu' (hands-up)...most of the time when I take MRT, I felt I am in a foreign country..

I am definitely for Phases 1 to 2A2…In fact I would think that students whose siblings have studied in the school before should be placed in Phase 1 together with siblings currently studying there (in case the age gap between the siblings is bigger than 5 years). Am not really for Phases 2B(2) and (3) and feel that schools should be very mindful with the PVs especially after hearing stories like Zoe Tay and husband’s efforts going down the drain despite putting in hours of ‘free labour’. The balloting thing is also perplexing…agree with another parent who mentioned that giving the SG’s 2 slips vs PR’s 1 slip doesn’t give priorty to SG citizens at all…
I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that Phase 2A1 and A2 remain and hope that the rest of the phases can be tweaked to give SG citizens more priority. And please…get some of the branded schools out of that certain stretch of road and abolish GEP altogether since I don’t see any real purpose in it anyway. All schools should have a talent programme instead and be given equal amount of resources to run it. -
I just called MOE and ask them afew questions.
1) May i know will the changes affect kids who are gg to reg for P1 this years?
ans : Sorry, we dont know.
2) Then may i ask wh group of pple will be affected? Is it alumni/PV/Clan/GRC etc??
Ans : Sorry we dont have the details yet!!
3) When will the changes be annouced then?
Ans : let me check about this and after 5 mins, the officer called me and said changes likely to be announced by May but not sure if it will take effect immediately anot??
I must say i m very disappointed with the answers i have received. Have the policy makers thought about the how the changes will affect parents who have made adjustments or plan for the P1 Reg? Although i do not know what will the changes be and who it will affect, i cannot help but to wonder why do they have to do it now? I really do hope they have gathered enough infor and checked with real parents on the ground before making/ implementing any changes which may affect parent in any of the group. -

don't blame them.
these type of things happen all the time. some big shot made some announcement, but those down the line facing the people are not kept updated. -
I thk alumni should stay but I feel it should be limited/ capped, just like under 2B cos I don’t see why 2A should be auto whereas 2B is not.

That, is your assumption and unfair statement.Want to eliminate alumni for the sake of your own children,
How about when your grand children time , moe decided cannot take in pple from alumni , will you hit tables and chair say it is not fair .... Irony ....
There are many parents here whose kids ALREADY got into the school and they support removal of the parent alumni priority.
There are pple who express their opinion from an objective POV, based on what is deemed to be in the best interest of the kid's education needs..
of coz there are others who express their views based on self interest.. that, I hv no comments..
Personally, I feel distance priority shd come first.. before alumni priority and not the other way..
First, best interest of the child, second, \"fairness\" to the various parties..
In addition, when considering best interest of the child, citizens maybe given priority over PRs.. I guess this is natural for any communities..
Maybe phase 1 - citizen siblings.
Up to 90% vacancy
Phase 2A < 1km
Alumni, then clan etc.. After alumni fill, if not enuff, clans ballot etc..
Up to 50% remaining vacancy
Phase 2B 1~2km
Alumni, then clan etc.. After alumni fill, if not enuff, clans ballot etc..
Rest of vacancies
Phase 2C > 2km
Free for all.. ballot.
I guess, this system is quite fair as it is quite unlikely that the vacancies can be fully filled by residents within 1km(?).. unless that place is very highly populated....
And, there is a fixed number of reserved vacancies for 2C where everyone gets a shot.. unlike current system > 1km totally NO chance at all for some schools.
btw, there is no branded school within 1km of my place.. I don't believe in all those trouble to send kids to a far away school bcoz it is branded.. -

I don't really agree. If it's on citizenship, it should be from the kid's perspective rather than the parent's. Ie, whether the kids are citizens or not.vicki:

That means BOTH parents are Singaporeans.
Kids should be children of Singapore citizens.
For cases when family is outstationed, kids' birth will be registered with embassy..he/she will be PR of that country of birth but still a Singapore citizen.

Wah lao. So based on your definition, my kids are 2nd-class even though they are Singapore Citizens, just bc my DH is a S'pore PR??? He has contributed to the economy for the last 25 yrs already .
