The first step shd be that all education/enrichment/tuition centers register with MOE, and introduce legalisation that license muz be obtained before they continue operation, and the licence is to be applied every, say, 2 years, subject to approval.


Then, slowly, introduce some guidelines and restrictions etc…

And then… if they cannot meet the guidelines or rules, stop issuing the licence…

Slowly, those "unnecessary" enrichment centers will be eliminated.

And Schooling children can have happy times again… as well as parents…

Those that excel will be those that are really bright or gifted… not well-trained and exam smart…

if your child is heading for NUS High type, perhaps P5 /P6 need to read in advance, because ...

end Sec 2 NUS High students' standard - is equivalent to GCE O level in mainstream Sec schools.
end Sec 4 NUS High students' standard - is equivalent to GCE A level in mainstream Sec schools.

if a child in P5 / P6 is heading for NUS High yet don't start read in advance, how ?
but if child heading for mainstream Secondary school, then perhaps no need lah.

My cousin is in RI sec 2. My sis, 24 years old, see his work say she dk how to do.

Ok lah, I had Chinese tuition bcos I did not understand what the teacher was talking about. But one assessment books only...used from jan to dec. I love those days. That was real childhood.

i guess in my childhood, ignorance was bliss. i didn't know that back in my days (not so long ago la), tuition was already a key to how some of my classmates actually had advantage over me...and i was still secretly that i no need tuition and they need (of course they do better than me la :oops: ).

Trained as in attending enrichment classes and taught exam techniques, not by hard work and self-preservation.

I don't work hard on my own accord. Only attend enrichment lessons (forced by my mom)

Keep your info coming. Jagan takut. Don't be discouraged to give of what you know. Even if they were broad sweeping (and I don't think they are). Don't worry about misleading anybody because many people out there do have wisdom and are not stupid. I don't visit this site often but when I do I find your resourceful comments done in good faith and you are sincere in helping people make decision. In any forum discussion, it is the job of the reader to judge and evaluate and the responsibility lies in them, not you.

I feel less sanguine about the part in red. Last year, DS' school principal used up many many Teacher hours to organise a showcase of what Teachers do in school. DS had to go too, to showcase his very cool experiment, which he set up with MY help and MY guidance. I would have preferred that his Teachers mark more work.

I know what DS' Teachers do in school. They don't mark work properly (if at all) and teach faithfully from the insufficient textbooks. Marking is THE single most powerful way a teacher can communicate individually with the child ESPECIALLY if the class is very large. Even marking is either not done or done wrong with Teacher making more spelling mistakes than my DS.

Marking well and thoroughly is a basic. Get the basics right before you move into the future. If Teacher can get the basics right and textbooks are sufficient, learning effectiveness will already improve greatly without any new cool stuff... or showcases.

I feel the same too. Please stop asking principals to go out and keep parents informed of NEW and INTERESTING things that the schools have done. All these showcasing and exhibitions took up too much time. It is all for show and it is not necessary at all. I would rather let the teachers to have more time to prepare their lesson and do their markings. Also the use of IT or ipad etc, does not necessarily mean that the students will be more engaged or understand the lesson better. Sometimes, good textbooks/guidebooks and the old fashion way of teaching 'talk and chalk' can be equally effective too.

Then you need not worry abt falling behind coz of not attending extra classes while all others are attending it (maybe apply to you parent too.. the \"need not worry\" part..)..

so.. less stressful and more fulfilling childhood..

Parents more time to play with kids..
