I agree with Louis that DHS should participate in JAE and allow late bloomers to join the school in Senior High. We have the third or 4th best intakes in the country based on PSLE COP but let’s be honest, some of them may underachieve and the best ones may choose to leave for RJC or HCI (though I read on this forum the numbers are decreasing). What I’m worried about is losing out to NJC and VJC, which are of comparable standards with DHS but has access to late bloomers as they participate in JAE.


Capacity is not a problem. I realise that the Candidate size of DHS hovers around 360 to 380. There can be say 50-100 places for grabs at DHS to replace the students that have left or can’t make the grade.It will be to our advantage as we only take in the best O levels students. Introducing fresh competitions will keep the incumbent students on their toes.

1984. There was no official ranking yet, but we know the first few batches of SAP, DHS was 1st, RV 2nd.

RI overtook after GEP was started. Chinese High after it went independent.
Note: The above is based on O Level Results. Glad that with IP, DHS can compete in A Level now.

In those late 70s and early 80s days, I read that the strongest SAP schools were DHS, RV and Saint Nicholas.

DHS was even ranked second in the first school ranking exercise (late 80s or early 90s?)

Chinese High has always been ranked higher amongst the SAP schools, when ranking started; it has even replaced RI and RGS as no 1 school

the first batch of SAP school students who took O levels were in 1982; at that time, there were still many in SAP schools who were not among the top in S'pore (based on PSLE results) as it was still something new and many parents and pupils were not clear about the SAP school concept and cultures; and i think the SAP schools also took in primary school chinese stream students who were at most above-average
having said that, SAP schools have come a long way and parents and pupils sought after them now

But the schools (both DHS and RV) JC1 and JC2 capacity were only planned for 450 maximum. 500-600 is too stretched on the resource. Moreover, there isn't much competitive O level takers left for J1 intake after 7 more schools go IP. Beside that, you can't be certain that those students taking O levels from TKGS, AHS, St Patrick etc.. will prefer DHS over VJC?

There are plots of empty land beside DHS
VJC would cut down its JC1 intake after VS IP. Similarly TJC JC1 intake may cut after it takes in Year 1 students. These are the only 3 IP schools in the east. Post O level students will have less choices. Some will prefer DHS if it is part of the MOE enrolment exercise. There are many late boomers. I just feel that there is no optimisation on economy of scale for a good school with only 400 students per cohort.

Kinda agree with you. A likely merger between VS and VJC will further reduce the intake at JC1 for VJC.

ok..I manage to find the newspaper article about the first school ranking. Dunman High was ranked third above Chinese High. But it was for one year only.

also, in the last few years calls of looking less at academic results, other aspects are impt too…there is too much emphasis on academic results

Anyway, news of A level results coverage is not of much interest to the public as compared to PSLE results. [/quote]Oh you meant media in general, not just newspapers even though you wrote newspapers. But you'll notice that all media are trying to move away from focusing on the top scorers. Of course they'll mention them, but the focus is on others who've done well. Like students who were ill and still did well, or students who come from broken families, or twins, or sportspersons. Not like before where they'll have a story dedicated to the top scorers. They've been doing this for several years now. I believe it's a directive from above.

Actually the newspaper can cover more leh... both on students who have overcome adversity and done well in the A level as well as the top scorers ... haha.. ksparents like me would love to read..:)

as these 2 schools already attract and chope
the top coat of the cream of the crop from both PSLE and O lvl pupils. :evil:
In addition, some of the high achievers, decide to leave for other JCs at the end of yr 4.

Oh, no, I'm not lamenting that Dunman cannot be as good as RI and HCI.. I just didn't want to claim Dunman's result to be comparable to RI and HCI--when I remarked that the results were \"comparable to top JCs\" .

In fact to me, whether the result can be as good as the other 2 \"I\"s results is not important. What's more important is that the school is able to consistently maintain the good performance (and Dunman has certainly accomplished it!) :rahrah: .
