MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni

Many schools have this in place.what is the definition of a Volunteer ?
refer dictionary:-
A volunteer is a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking willingly, without pay, without any hidden intention nor motive to receive any benefit in return.
WHO are the ones that can truly offer altruistic Volunteer services, without expecting anything back in return ?
plenty !
1) Parents with children already enrolled in primary schools, in Primary 1 and 2.
example:
SCGS, MGS - anytime the school need help, just a phone call to round up parents with kids already enrolled inside the school will do. They will come down, offer help in whatever areas need help.
just mobilize this huge group is more than enough.
It's the Parent Support Group. (PSG)
They have options for ad-hoc duties even.
Plus it's not just from the P1 and P2 cohorts.
It's the entire 6 levels.
Some schools' PSG are soooo strong and connected they don't need PVs year after year. -

2) is those parents who are ALUMNI under phase 2A.
this is the group who knows the school best every detailed nitty gritty in and out, having spent 6 long years in primary school that mould us up, with correct education and right moral values. This is the group that binds emotional ties well with their alma mater.
once MOE announce all alumni must be active made compulsory - no more sleeping, this huge group of parents will flock back to school imediately, start clocking up active Parent Volunteer roles + clock up active Alumni activities. In short, we the Alumni will return school, and take over all the PV roles, over and above performing our own alumni roles. After all, are we not the ones 30 years ago, build up reputation of our own school ?
alumni members who flock back to school immediately for fear of being categorised as sleeping members for the purpose of Phase2A, that in itself is a motive already, no?
even PSG members have some sort of 'motives' in joining PSG...welfare, knowing more about schs, free access into sch, network with teachers etc, no? Parent volunteers with kids already graduated...that then is true definition of volunteers and i know of 1 auntie who does so even when her kid is already in university (and she volunteers at a neighbourhood neighbourhood school)
i am just throwing out my thoughts lah...no support of whichever group to be arrowed as a lot of people will be affected no matter what is the outcome of MOE's decision. -
I was a PV. The P, trs and staff treated me with respect. I knew that there was no guarantee for a place. Any parents who think that being a PV or GRL or as a member of association or under the same religion will guarantee your child a place in the school of your choice do not have eeerrrrrr realistic expectation.
In a situation whereby demand exceeds supply, parents must have plan A, B and even C. Even if the review results in removing all connections, there’s still no guarantee that there’s a place for your child in schools that are popular. Will parents be happier in such a case if they fail to register a place for their child? I doubt so. What to do? Have Plan A, B and even C.
I escaped balloting by a narrow margin. I had Plan A, B and C. -

That's coz the school spirit is VERY strong!! Alot of us presume that it's mostly the alumni who will be active in PSG, but because of the strong spirit, I also noticed alot of spouses of alumni also get their hands wet....then there are also those who noticed how their older child changed by the school and have no qualms to PV when the younger one also enter P1...and they continue on even when the children are much older. -

:goodpost:what type of jobs parent volunteers are assigned to do to clock pv hours are immaterial if the ultimate objective is Phase2B priority (priority, not guarantee). so why the need to dig up and comment what type of jobs they will be requested to do? parents not happy, don't pv la. but i reckon most of the time, the main grouses came from the pv selection, not the nature of the pv jobs itself. by saying that such are 'meaningless', are we not saying that teachers who do
•Contributing to National Wushu Championship
•Traffic warden, assist in administrative work in the office
•Putting on make-up for cheerleaders, ferrying kids in between CCAs
•Escorting kids to the toilet
•Chaperons for excursions
•Buying groceries for parties
•Making sure kids don’t log on to Facebook during computer class
•Canteen duty
•Unpacking boxes, stacking, labelling of library books
•Manning game stalls
•Worst of all, acting in ridiculous skits
are all wasting their time? maybe that's why teachers are moody and don't teach as effectively these days?
i will gladly pv for the sch that is less than 500m from my place with a shot at getting a better priority in an earlier phase and wash their fish tanks if only they have fish tanks for me to wash. even if they have fish tanks, who is to decide which parent is a better fish tank washer? -

Yeah.. those pple shd undergo the first lesson.. definition of a volunteer.. or tested on it while at the interview for PV..what is the definition of a Volunteer ?
refer dictionary:-

All I want to say is.. they HAD a choice.. Nobody forced them..
Say, you earn $1k/mth.. you wanna buy a condo.. it is your choice.. Nobody force you.. don't buy already say condo too exp.. cannot pay installment etc..
Just bcoz you cannot afford you want to ban the sale of condos?
Same thing for PVs.. Other want to do it, it is their choice.. why make so much noise.. Just bcoz they cannot afford the time they want to deprive others of a better chance at the ballot/admission?
Or \"volunteer\" already then complain when cannot get it? They HAD a choice.. they can choose not to do it.. why complain..
On the other hand.. one possibility maybe the PV not take place at 2B but at 2C with more ballot slips.. Give them some advantage.. but not too much priority..
As for 2A, for those within 1km maybe ok to retain.. other than that, it shd be removed.. No practical benefit for priority if they stay so far.. Maybe not 1km.. but maybe 2km?.. but it shd be tied to distance/proximity so as to benefit the child..
PS: I quote your post bcoz it contains definition of volunteer.. not directly the reply at you....... -

The opening of some PVs slots gives those staying near but without connection to the school a chance to enter the school near their house. As the school is near their house, they could also alternatively be GRL for the same chance at 2B.
On the other hand, schools has the discretion to recruit or not recruit PV based on their needs. Parents also has the same discretion to apply or not apply to be PV knowing a place is not garenteed. I believe PVs can also \"resign\" from the post half way if they didn't want to continue. If the above is true, all participants including the schools are willing parties so to a certain extend, perhaps there is no harm for this option to stay for these willing parties.

If need be, just change the word \"volunteer\" to something else.

yes indeed. it is a contract between adults and both sides go in with eyes open. more so for the parents as they should know that the space for their kid is not guaranteed and some schools take in more volunteers than they should.

Am I hearing it right, that alumni members who live beyond 2km shouldn’t be given priority to register their kids? My hubby and my old schools are located far apart. It just so happens that our home is already in a central location in Singapore and within 1 km to hubby’s school. What do we do about daughter’s school? After successfully getting son into hubby’s old school, then do we move next door to my old school to secure higher chances for my daughter’s entrance? Or hopefully strike TOTO big-time and buy a second property next to her school? Why should we need to take such a drastic measure? We are happy where we live now.
I don’t understand why alumni members are given so much flak. While I can understand why parents serve as PVs, at the end of the day, they are hoping for their children to become a particular’s school’s alumni members, aren’t they? When the time comes for their children’s offspring to enter the school, would current PVs change their tune and then howl for abolishment of the PV scheme and reinstatement of alumni priority regardless of distance to school?
