MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni

Am I hearing it right, that alumni members who live beyond 2km shouldn’t be given priority to register their kids? My hubby and my old schools are located far apart. It just so happens that our home is already in a central location in Singapore and within 1 km to hubby’s school. What do we do about daughter’s school? After successfully getting son into hubby’s old school, then do we move next door to my old school to secure higher chances for my daughter’s entrance? Or hopefully strike TOTO big-time and buy a second property next to her school? Why should we need to take such a drastic measure? We are happy where we live now.
I don’t understand why alumni members are given so much flak. While I can understand why parents serve as PVs, at the end of the day, they are hoping for their children to become a particular’s school’s alumni members, aren’t they? When the time comes for their children’s offspring to enter the school, would current PVs change their tune and then howl for abolishment of the PV scheme and reinstatement of alumni priority regardless of distance to school? -

Correct. As it is, there is already so many affected parents and children. Especially those who cannot qualify even when the distance they are staying are 500m and less from the school. :hugs:

what is the definition of a Volunteer ?

A volunteer is a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking willingly, without pay, without any hidden intention nor motive to receive any benefit in return.
WHO are the ones that can truly offer altruistic Volunteer services, without expecting anything back in return ?

1) Parents with children already enrolled in primary schools, in Primary 1 and 2.
example:
SCGS, MGS - anytime the school need help, just a phone call to round up parents with kids already enrolled inside the school will do. They will come down, offer help in whatever areas need help.
just mobilize this huge group is more than enough.
2) is those parents who are ALUMNI under phase 2A.
this is the group who knows the school best every detailed nitty gritty in and out, having spent 6 long years in primary school that mould us up, with correct education and right moral values. This is the group that binds emotional ties well with their alma mater.
once MOE announce all alumni must be active made compulsory - no more sleeping, this huge group of parents will flock back to school imediately, start clocking up active Parent Volunteer roles + clock up active Alumni activities. In short, we the Alumni will return school, and take over all the PV roles, over and above performing our own alumni roles. After all, are we not the ones 30 years ago, build up reputation of our own school ?
alumni members who flock back to school immediately for fear of being categorised as sleeping members for the purpose of Phase2A, that in itself is a motive already, no?
even PSG members have some sort of 'motives' in joining PSG...welfare, knowing more about schs, free access into sch, network with teachers etc, no? Parent volunteers with kids already graduated...that then is true definition of volunteers and i know of 1 auntie who does so even when her kid is already in university (and she volunteers at a neighbourhood neighbourhood school)
i am just throwing out my thoughts lah...no support of whichever group to be arrowed as a lot of people will be affected no matter what is the outcome of MOE's decision. -

Correct. They are still there till today. I would too if i had the baby off my hands. Some schools are worth all the involvement seeing how much they put in for the children.. be it in terms of values or academics..buds:
Some schools' PSG are soooo strong and connected they don't need PVs year after year.
That's coz the school spirit is VERY strong!! Alot of us presume that it's mostly the alumni who will be active in PSG, but because of the strong spirit, I also noticed alot of spouses of alumni also get their hands wet....then there are also those who noticed how their older child changed by the school and have no qualms to PV when the younger one also enter P1...and they continue on even when the children are much older.
We entered via P2C in a neighbourhood school nobody wanted and went in easily. We took option to be in ad-hoc PSG duties due to hubs' working commitment and me being a stay-home mommy with a tot then. But that was only \"after\" our daughter got in. No motives whatsoever. We did because it was a pleasure to work with the school not just a matter of serving time. We enjoyed ourselves and the children loved having us around. We also enjoyed good rapport with the teachers and are updated abt the on-goings of the school. -

Well.. after my kid got in at P2C, I considered to join the PSG too to help out.. but their schedule just cannot fit. They expect parents to help out during office hours and during weekdays.. how to commit if one is working?

They just don't have those weekend kind of activities.. -
Ya, cos policy chg to 5-day work week n school for children so tt families hv quality weekend family time to spend together. Not for sending for enrichment classes orh… So nowadays either less CCAs on Sat or none at all for schools.

psg also got a lot of politics.
i chose not to join psg, just helped out in a few activities in school. like that also got small parties :pokeeye: sometimes very hard to get things done. a few of us just sat on fence not taking side.
