Maybe can negotiate with maid: $430 is inclusive of the compensation for days off. :xedfingers:

I am curious. If I give my maid 4 days off a week, does this mean I get to deduct from her pay? Or currently paying her $430 without day off. After renewal next year, it will be $430 minus $80?

Just trying to understand the new system. Is my calculation wishful thinking?

        I think it will be $430+$80 :).

Are you paying the maid 430 now?

If yes, when renewing the contract next year, let's say you increase her salay to 450, then it is 450 per month plus 4 days off.

If you want her to work on her day off, you need to pay her for that day.

Think for a lot of us, doing without a maid for 1 day a week is still manageable. Especially so for those who hire a maid mainly for household chores and child minding. 1 day of not sweeping/mopping the floors or doing the laundry or dining out is no big deal.

The concern is more on whether the maid will ‘turn bad’ or get themselves into unwanted troubles.

But my personal view is, that is not reason enough to not give your maid an off day.

I also want to give maid days off to cut cost, but the maid does not want. Who can help employers to enforce this ?

She reasons that when she goes out : she does not earn the extra $20 a day, got to pay for transport (taxi fare if come back late by taxi), eat out $$, etc etc...not only did not have extra income but got to pay out some more ...

but most of the times it will be Sunday right? I mean maids also want to go out during days when most of their friends can go out, else what is the point of going out by herself?

look at the case of the filipina died in the hotel room with the bangladeshi worker, throat slit … why ? how it happen ?

ST reported her friends as saying she started to distance away from them after getting to know this bf…she already married with 3 kids … and get involved with this bf, pose picture of being together with bf in swimming pool some more on fb…and now tragedy struck … it all started with days off …

some people argue that because they need social life and be out of the work place (employer’s home) and then lose control over themselves and get into trouble, some, not all, so don’t slam me

some employers fear precisely this kind of trouble

With all maids granted a day off by 2015, industry players said there is a need to ramp up social services for such workers.

Ms Tan explained: \"Foreign workers, when they have a day off, they do not have many places to go. So when they congregate in numbers in certain locations of Singapore, it does cause a lot of concern to the people around.

\"This is where I would like the ministry to address this issue of looking into social amenities, support services, places where foreign workers can go to recreate, learn, places where they can pursue healthy activities during their days off.\"
                      ---
And they even want the gahmen to take good care of the maids during their day off so that they stay out of trouble. And this really irks me.

It is actually not mandatory to let maid to go off on Sundays. It can be any day of the week.

the request is always for sundays, because that is the day their friends are off too, etc etc...not sunday will get black face for a few days from the maid
