From what I understand from the new ruling, if the maid doesn't want to take the day off, the employer has to compensate her $20. So if she doesn't want to take all her off days, you have to pay her extra $80 every mth. That will become additional financial burden for the employer, so it will become our problem. :nailbite:

      POA Teacher:
Effective from next year, and only applies to those renewing or starting from 1.1.13.
When the time comes my maid (if I still have one then),will be given the day off every week. If she doesn't want to go out, that's her problem, not mine.

As expected, many people seem to have misunderstood the new ruling.

New rule : she is entitled to one day off per week.
YOU want her to work instead of taking the off, you have to get her agreement, and pay her for it.
If you don't ask her to stay home and work, you let her go out. She does not have the right to insist on staying home and collecting extra.

You have to compensate them if you want them to work for you on the day off. If you don't want them to work on their off day you but they want to work, you don't have to compensate them. Just let them hang around the house and laze.

            OK, so this is interesting...

According to the press release on the MOM website \"MOM’s approach recognises that some employers may have genuine difficulties giving FDWs a weekly rest day, and that some FDWs may prefer the option to work and earn more by forgoing their rest days.\"

But the Annex document on the website gives no mention of the case where the FDW requests not to work. It just says \"All FDWs are entitled to one rest day every week. Employers and their FDW will be given flexibility to mutually agree on which day of the week the rest day falls.
            b. If the employer would like his FDW to work on her rest day, he should come to a mutual agreement with the FDW on the number of rest days to forgo each month. For each rest day forgone, the FDW shall be compensated with at least one day’s wageon top of her monthly salary;\"

I think this is something that MOM needs to clear up and the agencies need to manage the expectations of the maids.

Imagine if a new maid comes to work for and she's incompetent. After 6 days with you, you need to give her off. That's the part I find hard to accept. After working for another 2 more weeks still cannot make it I will probably will transfers her out. I wonder whether the new maid \"wa! So good, cannot work just transfer. At the same time I can still go out and have fun. Since my employer don't like my work, go out already, no need to come back\" will this happen?0

Imagine you get a new job - at the end of one week your new boss thinks you are pretty useless. Does that mean that he/she won't let you take Saturday & Sunday off?

I doubt a new maid is going to just go off and not come back - where will they go unless they are old enough to go to HOME or the embassy and claim abuse. Yes there are some bad apples but they are a very small minority.

Maids are given a booklet by MOM giving the contacts of HOME and their embassies and where to run to if they need help. Also, when they first arrive in Singapore they're staying at the agency's hostel. Here they pick up 'tips' from more experienced maids. So they learn early on where to get help.

Need advice. After my maid’s loan repayment of 7 months is up, I’m supposed to pay her $480 with 1 off day per month. But when it is time for renewal (that is if she still wants to work under me haha…now that fdws have higher bairgaining power now!) How much do I need to compensate her if she wants 1) to stick to only 1 off day but stays at home on the other 3 days 2) wants 2 off days per month 3) 3 off days. This compensation thing is confusing. I’m sure many employers may hold back their goodwill salary increment because it’s so frightfully expensive to employ fdws. Also how many hours of ‘off’ is considered reasonable?

No they will let you take sat and Sunday off, and also Monday to Fridays too. I know if I chat on the phone too long at work on non work related matters, or if through my own issue don't have enough sleep such that my work is affected, my employer will ask me to go back and 'eat myself'.

And they don't pay for my transport back home also. 🦆

what if the maid insists on working on her off days so as to get extra money, but I rather she takes her off days? This is going to get very complex... :slapshead:

You go back to the original contract which says 4 off days. She can't insist on working and make you pay her if you don't need her to work. It has to be mutually agreeable.

Huh? Not go to TWC2 and Home to complain your maid don't want rest meh? I'm sure they will sort her out.
