would you let your uni kids have tuition?

When they are at uni stage, i expect my kids to be giving tuition and not having tuition!!
:hi5: Same thoughts. Time to earn their keep and for me to spend more on myself :rotflmao: -

:hi5: same here. Not even sure if DH & I would have enough to put 2 consecutively (cos only 1 year apart) in uni. My kids should be counting their blessings if we can pay for them in full, otherwise they better do some part-time to help pay their fees. Can forget about tuition..... :roll:schweppes:

I would even expect my kids to be capable of doing the laundry or cook a simple meal occasionally

no need to wait till uni age to learn to do housework. my dds help me to do simple chores like folding clothes, sweeping the floor and washing their dishes. In fact, when dd1 was 12yo, she will even help me to wash the toilets - even tho i don't ask her or expect her to do that. my mom said that she's better than me at 12yo than when i was a 12yo

When kids at uni, i expect them to work and earn their own pocket money.

Someone choose yes

Would expect my kids to do some part time work during uni to earn their keeps, and tuition or teaching music can be quite good money (see how much the parent pay for tuition in the other threadSAHM_TAN:

cannot lah! I feel something seriously wrong with the child if the child doesn't feel paiseh about still having tuitions at that age!
But again, there are surely parents out there who believe the money is well-spent to get a good report card.

Is it reasonable to expect the kids, who are so used to tuition from kindy to JC, not to rely on tutors at uni level? I know of parents who provide lots of tuition to their primary school kids but expect their kids to turn independent overnight when they go to secondary schools. But they have a shock when they realise that their kids need more tuition at secondary level cos more subjects to cope with so they continue to provide tuitions. But seriously, can we expect our kids to know how to fish when all that we did is to provide unlimited supply of fishes at all time to them?

That is why it is better not to have tuition unless your kid really can't cope. This I mean below 60 marks consistently. Kids who have tuition will somehow eventually become dependent on their tutors. As a tutor, I can see the upward trend and it will only get worse. To parents, they think that attaining that academic success outweighs the disadvantage of having tuition. This is a very myopic view. Sure, your kid will ace his/her exams and manages to go to Uni but what happens after that? Will they be a square peg trying to fit into a round hole? Sad to say, many have a Uni degree but when it comes to being practical, they are lost. DS1 worked part time as a waiter after he decided to drop out of poly. He was very well-liked by his boss and customers that he received the most praises and tips. He got along well with the staff that the chefs even taught him a few dishes (something a chef won't even be so willing to do for an apprentice). Some of the customers told him that they enjoyed his service so much that they wanted him and nobody else to serve them. When my SIL3 knew about DS1's job, she requested that DS1 recommended her DS2 to work there too. Her DS2 worked less than 2 months before giving up. He couldn't cope with the demands of the job. DS1 told me that he couldn't even lay tables without dropping the cutlery. He ended up giving tuition to earn pocket money. DS1 never had tuition all his life while her DS2 have tuition from P1 to JC2.
If you keeping holding onto a child when he learns to walk, he'll take a longer time to learn. I heard from someone that if you want a child to learn to swim, just push him into the water. :rotflmao:
