Maid to get weekly rest days

High chance of transferring if you dont pay extra or give 4 days off. Don't forget.... She may tell you first thing in the morning and pack up.....You and your kids must stand in the road unless you make a quick plan. It happended for me with my first maid of course the issue is not the money but her character, always on the phone, try to source out for BF, leave my DD at home and go down , etc, etc, I told her to behave..... that is it.... Pack up..... Then I quickly called my employer to ask for urgent leave, otherwise who is going to take care of my child after school? My god, tell you not easy..It is good that we really plan for every worst scenario and plan ahead....
Though the new policy will only impact those renewing or new work permits wef Jan 2013, existing maids that will not have renewal until much later date will still compare among peers. For eg. my maid next renewal will be in next July therefore she will definitely compare those who enjoy weekly off day while she doesnt have. I will need to adjust her pay if not she will threaten to change employer.POA Teacher:
You need to pay her the extra only if YOU want her to work on day off. But you can be sure some employers will misinterpret, and pay even when it's the maid who doesn't want to go out.
Then spoil it for everyone else.
Btw, the weekly day off does not apply to your current contracts. Only for those renewing or new work permits wef 2013. -
I hope MOM can come up with more rules when it comes to medical bills of FDW, the strict guidance on they should not work on the off-days and if the employer decides to pay for off-days, it should be under what circumstances (if most of the employers choose to pay and the FDWs are willing to earn extra, then why do they need extra off days???), etc…

Just wonder if the economic situation is so bad that the govt wants the 200-300K? maids in Singapore to go out once a week to "boost the economy". With that, they will probably need a pay increment soon. Also… what about the transport system? Just imagine, 200k - 300K maids ? will be flooding out transport system on weekends.

They should scrap the crapy levy! come of think of it, want to take levy yet want women to continue working, want families to give procreate more, yet don't want to give more help. want teach less in school then parents have to outsource. on the pretext to help you manage your CPF monies when age 65. Our country gahment really runS our country like a companies and not from their hearts.

- lack of babies
=> citizens, pls procreate
- lack of manpower
=> females, pls return to workforce
- complaints that school teachers overwork
=> Less teaching
- maids not getting off days, so getting rapped by ILO (international labor org)
=> implement off days for maids

Cos these 2 points are too much trouble and doesn't benefit them... Take away levy means :moneyflies: for them... Seriously, all the above points have impacts to each other whenever a policy is made... yet either they know and is acting blur, or they just do not care, or they somehow cannot see all the inter-connecting relationship between each of them?? i wonder which is the real reason!?!?! -

Don't think so. If they really wants to wean us off maids, they should be looking at improving the working hours of parents first. I'm sure a lot of us hopes to do without maid but have no choice due to the long/irregular working hours. -

1. scrap the FDW levy of S$170/$265, since it is not the government’s idea of making money from families who need maids. walk the talk please.
2. scrap the mandatory medical screening every six months, since it is stated that if the maid is pregnant the bond will not be forfeited; and the medical screening serves no purpose as even new maids arrival have diseases undetected.
3. scrap the insurance policy, since the maid can job hop, and not fair for employer to start new policy with every maid change, or change the policy to follow employer to cover any maid under under the employment of the family. In any company’s group medical policy, they don’t start a new policy every time some one resigns right ?
4. please make it compulsory for the maid to get out of the house during off day, preferable leave the house the night before the off day and only report back for duty on the morning of the first working day of the week. Every one loves a long week end, and this one will sure score more points with the ILO and the NGO who champion the rights of the maids! Don’t just do it, do it better than expected, please! Just like we employees don’t loiter in the office when we are off work, especially week ends.
5. make it illegal for the employer to pay the placement fees on behalf of the maid. She wants to work, she pays. That way employers will not be short changed when the maid leaves before end of contract
6. make the maid responsible for their own air ticket cost. there is no free lunch
7. make it illegal to transfer maid from one employer to another. if she is not happy and want to switch employer, she must return to her home country and re-apply. that way you will have more serious minded maid instead of maid who comes for holiday and take employers for a ride while the maid agencies make a milking churning maids headcount
8. make it mandatory jail sentence for maid agencies who provide falsified biodata of maids, who over declare on age, under declare on job experience, since it is the agencies’ business to recruit maid for a profit - they should do the due diligence
