MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni
-
sunbeamz:
Totally agree! actually most of us who are going to enrol our kids into P1 in the near future will definitely be an alumni member from a school as long as you have been in the Singapore education system! It's probably just whether you like your alumni or not. This is where the unhappiness of the 'alumni priority' comes in. If you are happy and proud of alumni then you would gladly want to be associated with it. If otherwise, then this is where all the noise starts!
:celebrate:
That is where the eye sores are about. That is the truth and that is why it hurts.laughingcat:

Some alumni(s) are better than others? That's where we are now...

Parents naturally want the best for their children, although ‘best’ holds different definitions for different people. Let’s be more respectful to those who have taken the time and effort to post their suggestions and opinions. Some of the posts are indeed worth considering in improving the p1 registration system. Instead of attacking one another with strong terms like ‘skewed reasoning’ and other terms which border on being offensive, we should find means to enure that the policy makers are aware of the issues concerned and suggestions for improvements. If not handled properly, it will be sad if Singaporeans become divided over such issues. As it is, many of us are already vexed with other day to day concerns, foreign talent, public transportation, etc.
I know I’m thankful that I’ve the time to even participate in this forum. What about the other less well off parents who are so busy working shifts and taking care of their kids and other family members they don’t have the time or luxury to complain like we do? Since we can all help by being a voice for the respective groups ‘with vested interest’, our voice must be heard, but how do we do that? Will any policy maker plough through this forum and take positive actions based on what we Singaporeans have to say? -

Couldn't have said it better myself. -
aiyo...P1 registration so complicated...then maybe they should revamp it into a scoring system...let parents put 3 choices in their registration and MOE come up with some scoring system (eg alumni within 1km score 5pts; alumni within 1-2km score 4points; nonalumni within 1km score 4points; nonalumni within 1-2km score 3points; plus 1point for every 1 kid you have; plus 1 point if your address is not rental etc) for each applicants and rank all applicants and then find the score and then post to the appropriate school. parents can appeal after results are out, subject to vacancies from withdrawal of students from their choice sch.
oopss...better :siam: for my radical ideas. :siam: -
Like your idea, jedamum. Sounds like the points sytem used for immigration. Good to have a few preferred schools instead of that ‘die die must enter that one school’ mentality. Might just work. But imagine the administrative hell …

If you're talking about active members.. ok.. it is valid.
As stated by the Ministry, connection is more important as it foster bonding between the community and the school.laughingcat:

\"Connection\" vs \"distance\".
As for sleeping members, I'll throw that argument out of the window.
hence, Alumni priority shd be subjected to strict evaluation/approval process..
And NOT blanket priority for sleeping members to benefit.
An alumni is an alumni, it is the Heart and the Spirit within that counts. It is not whether the alumni is \"sleeping\" or not! Once these alumni gets their kid in if they so desired, I can betcha they will be sleeping no longer but will be doing PSG or PV even, in the truest sense of the word \"volunteer\"!
To reiterate my earlier post, you get rid of the alumni priority you are getting rid of the goose which lays the golden egg. Gone, liow, liow! :lightrod: :lightrod: -

ya agree too. i still remembered used to actively help to raise funds in p5 for the new building and also the alumni helped to raise funds and fund fair. When we finally moved to new building, still remembered the principal saying thanks to the old boys and girls and the current students , and that for us p6, we got to use the building for only 1 year but principal told us, remember to send your kids back next time to let them see the building and places daddies and mummies helped to raise fund. Sometimes i still cannot get over not registering my child in my old school but no choice cos old school >2km away from my house
You are a great rational parent, larkspur! I am sure you must have considered very carefully before making that painful decision not to register your kid into your alumni due to the distance!
It should be up to the alumni parent to DECIDE whether to send our kid to our alumni or not or whether the distance is practical or not. It is NOT for the garmen to tell alumni whether it is in the best interest of the kid or not to go to a nearby school.
(BTW in case anybody got confused about my stand, my hubby is an alumni of a \"gem school\" and he is adamant about sending my golden piglet there soon. Distance more than 2km but I think logistically still can. I was from a street-named neighbourhood school which already kerna demolished. So now I am \"fighting\" for phase 2A to stay so that my piggy can get in to my husband's alumni school. Get it?) -
dorisp:
Whole decision are you referring to?The issue is \"Distance\" vs \"Connection\".
Decision making ultimately will be \"Head\" vs \"Heart\".
The MOE or the parent?
So you are for distance priority but remove the alumni \"connection\" priority.
I will say both are equally important. Not one over the other.
For alumni staying > 2 km, it should be for the PARENTs themselves to decide whether it is practicable or not. Not another of those garmen's high-handedness to tell us what is good for our own kids!

Very good post Power Puff!I agree with laughing cat and mrswongtuition's posts. For the many reasons already mentioned, alumni will obviously stay. I don't know how GRLs actually contribute directly to the school to warrant them priority. GRLs and community leaders should not even be at the same priority level as alumni. I suspect the Ministry may also phase out the PV scheme (to be effective after the 2014/15 registration) since it's ambiguous and several schools have already abolished it anyway, and give parents under 2B more priority based on distance between school and home.
For parents who are unhappy about sleeping alumni members, please remember these pupils have directly contributed to their school while they were studying there. You do not and cannot expect all alumni members to actively contribute to that same primary school for the rest of their lives as they also attend sec, post sec and uni, find jobs, get married, have children and other commitments? Choosing to send their kids back to the very same primary school is also another form of contribution. And it is true that despite the hiccups here and there, our public transportation system has improved. In the 70s and 80s, we didn't have MRT, LRT. We had to rely on public bus and for the more fortunate ones, school bus or private transport.
We should focus more on how to make the P1 registration system Phases 2B and 2C better by giving more priority according to distance, while leaving the siblings and alumni phases with the same top priority. Pupils of ex-siblings should be in the same phase as pupils of current siblings, in line with govt's efforts at encouraging procreation. To a smaller extent, MOE will also need to address the issue of priority given to SG citizens vs PRs. There's just so much resentment about Singaporeans being made to feel 2nd class citizens, as witnessed during the elections. Even if the citizenship priority is not addressed, then giving priority based on distance itself will be a good change and welcomed by many parents who have more than 1 child.
1. Retain the alumni priority. There is no such thing as a \"sleeping alumni\". An alumni is an alumni!
2. This is one area whereby garmen can START to distinguish between citizens and PR. I have enough of a PR colleague laughing at us and ridiculing us, saying he has no reason to renounce his citizenship across the causeway since he enjoys ALL the benefits of having his family here in SG (even better than us since he can buy HDB flat whereas unmarried citizens can't!). C'mon, lets have some backbone man! :frustrated: -

er....so what's the score now?? :?
