Banning advertisement may cause backfire.

No cigarette ads but i see even more young smokers.
No casino ads but they make billions each year.

If no tuition centers ads, parents can always find one thru words of mouth or here.

You may see even more smokers if they advertise and make it glamorous.. to entice unsuspecting teenagers.

They may make even more with advertising.. if they play correctly and imparting some get-rich-quick\" messages.. to entice greedy folks.

Parents find thru words of mouth.. that is good, isn't it? the good centers gets the recommendations and referrals.. rather than parents mislead by evil advertisements..

It is all too easy to put bait and hook parents via skillfully crafted advertisements.. enticed by the prospect of having straight A kids..

Also, it is a disservice to the education professions and the good folks at govt schools, that alternative education centers are present. To allow tuition centers on a widespread level is acknowledgement from the policy makers that the national education program is inadequate..

But why not just ban it like firecracker or chewing gum? Short and sharp.

Having been in this forum for quite some time, I felt that most parents here are very lucky as their kids are mostly intelligent and willing to study. My own kids are also like that and I thought that teaching kids would only involve giving them the correct concept with the easiest possible way to understand.


I was proven wrong after volunteering to help my relatives' kids in their study. I realised that there are kids who are so slow, to the extent that they just cannot grasp the concept of \"profit = revenue - cost\". There are also those smart ones who just refuse to remember anything that had been taught.

A good school is one with good teachers. Most think that a good teacher is one who is knowledgeable in the subject matters. No, such teachers are good only for bright and hardworking kids.

A good teacher is one who knows the different way of managing and motivating a kid. Some need to be threatened to work hard, some need to be praised. Most lazy kids need to be made to feel obligated to the teacher and these are the toughest nuts to crack. There are many more variations. Therefore, knowing how to get a kid to start working because they like him or her is my definition of a good teacher.

Just like now they ban advertisement by the casinos..

I feel.. tuition center is another social vice that degrades the overall well-being of the education system (i.e. MOE schools) and drawing away capable teachers from the govt teaching profession..

Also, it's quite distasteful for the centers to be boasting about the so-and-so top scholars from their tuition center when these kids could very well did as well even w/o attending the tuition classes..

If they advert the value-added, like significant increase in scores after attending lesson, maybe not so bad.. but if they take in top students and produces top student.. what pride is there there to boost about? Other than attempting to mislead parents to increase profits..

Your persistence has won my admiration. I m beginning to enjoy your ban-dy moot!

So must ask MDA to take tuition advertisement under their umbrella. :rotflmao:

There’ll be no end in the debate of the term ‘good’…all I can say is that all schools are NOT EQUAL or the same!!!


Even within the same class there will be kids who will be in the teacher’s ‘inner circle’. In this grp, the kids will see their teacher as ‘goodest teacher’ and the teacher will be most happy with these kids. But in the same class, there will be those who would be most forgettable, ie, the teacher forget that this grp kids are around. They will be quietly doing their work, nothing outstanding…perhaps making up the numbers for the class population. Then there will be the troublemakers…not necessarily bad in results but perhaps discruptive, destructive or non-conforming…kids who UPSET the system. These kids will forever not get along with the teacher.

So dependning on which grp yr kid belongs to, the teacher can be the ‘goodest’ or juz…forgettable…so can we even judge if it’s a good school or not??

This is just an example and my opinion…

Problem is MOE wants to see paper qualifications first. You have to go take hotel management course, baking course, cooking classes etc and show these certificates. :siam:
