      Hi

Could someone kindly explain about ELL final computed grade.
      E.g. score of A/20, B/20 and C/20 for the 2 assignments n test respectively.
Do I take the weightage of 15%, 15% and 70% to computer overall grade, i.e.
      A/20x 0.15 + B/20 x0.15 + c/20 x 0.7 = Final mark?

Both of us are very confused. How can weights add up to more than 100%?
The Chinese weights add up to exactly 100%, which should be the way!

          Hi Jeannie12

There were 2 test results for my son.
Maybe you need to check with the teacher.
However, teachers don’t seem to reply to emails much.
My son has emailed his teacher twice about other matters. She hasn’t been replying.

Just want to ask: do your teachers reply to your son’s questions via email?
I am quite disappointed with some of the teachers who don’t seem to reply even to urgent emails about missed work etc. What is the school policy on this?

Which consoritium is your son in? I do understand your concerns about teachers not replying to emails, but Hwa chong teachers in general are pretty good at replying to emails but please understand teachers today have many amny tasks other than teaching.

The marking of homework takes lots of time, preparation of lessons etc almost leave teachers with no time even to have a proper meal in school!

I suggest a few things you and your son can do.

            1. Your son should find out quickly where exactly his teachers' seats are in the staff room so he can go look for them and see them personally if there is anything really urgent.

            2. Parents, please try you best to attend Parent/Teachers meetings to get to know your son's teachers better, nothing beats a face to face meeting to leave an impression so when you contact themin future, they will have a better idea of who you are.

It is important parents work hand in hand with the school, have faith in the Hwa Chong system, I have seen my son pass through this system, he graduated from the college last year, and my daughter, who was from Nanyang, graduated from the college in 2008.

yogaqueen, thanks. My son did encounter similar situation with no reply from the teachers but I advised him to approach them in school instead.

                Hi yogaqueen,

U r correct in e ELL mks computation. Or u could just take e total assignment marks x 30/total mks for e assignments. Yes i understand why u r confuse cos they put e weightage as 30% per assignment. But at least tis yr they hv tis exam marks checking which indicate e % weightage, for e past 2 yrs i always hv to email either e teachers or e dept head to get a clear picture of how e marks r computated especially ELL & CF where there r a few assignments included, other subjects r merely tests so pretty straight forward.

Thank you very much for your replies. No wonder this forum is active. Because the replies are faster than the school's :).

Tetsujin - could I draw upon your years of experience please? When is the first parent teacher meeting for Sec 1's? Before the actual Parent Teacher meeting, what are my avenues for reaching out to teachers? I would think email is the less intrusive on teachers' time.

I have a younger son who is in P5, a neighbourhood school. I communicate with his teachers via email. They respond maybe 2-3 days later but at least, they do.

I am ok with HCI teachers. currently my DS is in Sec 1, I have wrote email to his FT twice, both are replied in same day. you can call teacher directly to make appointment.
Regarding math result, my understanding is they just take the higher one as Term 1 result.

The first major meeting, other than the first general parent meeting (which should be in February) should be in May to review the exam results. Use the May meeting get to know the teachers by face. If possible, husband and wife should go so each can meet different teachers to be able to see all. If only one is going, chances are you won't be able to meet all teachers. See this link for school calendar, http://www.hwachong.edu.sg/ContentPage.asp?SID=38.

Which consortium is your son in? For important matters, just drop a email or phone call to schedule a face to face meeting. I will be surprised if the teachers don't reply to your emails. If after a few tries and no reply, drop a friendly email to the consortiumk director, that should get you connnected to the teachers.

Take a friendly approach, the teacher might not be ignoring you, just very busy. But if it is an important matter, state in the email you need to meet them urgently, it should get them to reply.

Do not wait till PTM, as there is very little time at PTM to discuss things, plus you have a whole bunch of parents behind you during the meeting, not convenient to discuss sensitive matters.

Thanks Jeannie12 and Tetsujin for your replies. Truly appreciate the advice! I have asked my son to approach the teacher directly and ask for guidance. By the way, I just checked the Parents’ Portal today and the progress report for Term 1 is already available for viewing.
