But I recalled couple of years ago 2/3 of cohort failed Maths or something like that.

That's P5 CA1 . . which is quite common in all school.

P5 Math is so amazingly different that one would wonder what the 4 years p1-4) of school has taught and why is it irrelevant at P5. It's a total diff ballgame. It's like what in the world is this ? :nailbite: questions like 'how much did he have at first?' :faint: marks fall by multiples in P5. My son scored 84 at P4 SA2, dropped to 38% last year CA1.

S6169:
Last year, the MA teacher did not use the textbook, but made the pupils kept a MA journal exercise book that recorded impt notes.

This year, the MA teacher did not use the textbook nor practise keeping a journal.

For my younger boy who is not an auditory learner, u can imagine how much info flied over his head at sch:faint: He did not understand the order of 4 operations, he did not understand fraction divided by a whole number. And I found out these while doing damage repair by going through term 1 MA with him ytd.

After thinking abt this outsourcing of work to parents, I am seriously considering not letting my boy continuing with the Tues/Thurs supplementary lessons, except for CL lessons.

I found out that my son did not understand the order of 4 operations, and I thought it is beacuse he didn't pay attention in class.
But when I found out that he did not understand fraction multiplication, cannot apply this concept in the problem sums and the teacher didn't correct him as long as he got the correct answer. I realised that something is wrong for his math this year. When I try to look for the textbook and found out that they did not use the textbook.
Same as you, I am doing damage repair by going through term 1 MA. I also bought one more homework book and pick up some q, let my son redo the q, make sure he use the correct concept.
唉, 求人不如求己.

:yikes: your boy did not understand the order of 4 operations like mine?

Something is really not right in the class.
With regard to the order of operation, i remember it was in one of the worksheets during term time. But somehow the teacher did not mark that section. hmmm. :scratchhead:

I checked with my boy how lesson plan is conducted. He says the teacher will flash qns on the projector, sometimes he will explain the method to solve the qns.

What comments does your boy hv for this teacher?

I prefer last year MA teacher. :xedfingers: for next year

But he said the teacher would ask the class whether they want him to go thru a certain question or not, if the class says no, then he would skip it. i think becos it is the top class, so he tries to go thru the lessons quickly and dun want to bore the pupils?

sorry to ask but may i know what do u need to understand abt 4 orders of operations? is knowing that order such as multiplication/division done b4 addt/subtnsufficient? or do we need to understand the reason why it is done?

It \"is knowing that order such as multiplication/division done b4 addt/subtn sufficient\".

And it must be from left to right and do the operations in a bracket first.

Qns like (57-32) /5 x 2

My boy did not know that it must be from left to right.

Any idea how the P5 M1 class fared in this CA1? Or how many pupils are attending MA enrichment/tuition classes outside the sch?

The MA teacher expressed disappointment that my boy whose P4 MA scores were very good to get only 80+ for this CA1 and concluded that my boy has not been practising enough. I wonder if he has asked himself what he had not done enough to help my boy maintain his MA grades.

 mode on again.

After speaking to the MA teacher, I somehow got a feeling that he is another Sci HOD.

Like what S6169 said 求人不如求己, we need to depend on ourselves. Seems like I cant join FQW's lovely wife L-F club liao.

This shall be my last ranting post. Continue ranting will only make me more depressed.

Hey Jennifer, you are not ranting. We have our frustrations and should not bottle up. Or else we will go :siao: yes, we cannot depend on school to bring our kids up to mark. We have to take charge ourselves.

Order of the 4 operation - follow the BODMAS rule and you won’t get it wrong

B Brackets first
O Orders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.)
DM Division and Multiplication (left-to-right)
AS Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)
Divide and Multiply rank equally (and go left to right).
Add and Subtract rank equally (and go left to right)

Order of Operations
Do things in Brackets First. Example:

6 × (5 + 3) = 6 × 8 = 48
6 × (5 + 3) = 30 + 3 = 33 (wrong)

Exponents (Powers, Roots) before Multiply, Divide, Add or Subtract. Example:

5 × 22 = 5 × 4 = 20
5 × 22 = 102 = 100 (wrong)

Multiply or Divide before you Add or Subtract. Example:

2 + 5 × 3 = 2 + 15 = 17
2 + 5 × 3 = 7 × 3 = 21 (wrong)

Otherwise just go left to right. Example:

30 ÷ 5 × 3 = 6 × 3 = 18
30 ÷ 5 × 3 = 30 ÷ 15 = 2 (wrong)

Jennifer, I can sense your frustration. 加油!

I do not know what is the average for the M1 class. Anyone else knows?
I think quite a few have enrichment classes outside school from what I heard. But then I guess this is normal in SG?
