          Hi,

This is my first posting here. I have a question. My dd was invited to join dance (niche cca in the sch) as her cca. she’s in P2. how’s the cca like if anyone has dd (or know of any kiddos) in that cca? tough or not? many practices? so far it’s on fri. but if she has to stay on till p6, i dunno if practices will increase and then once she’s in, it’s not easy to get out. any info will be appreciated. thanks!

            Hi,

My dd was invited to join dance (niche cca in the sch) as her cca. she's in P2. how's the cca like if anyone has dd (or know of any kiddos) in that cca? tough or not? many practices? so far it's on fri. but if she has to stay on till p6, i dunno if practices will increase and then once she's in, it's not easy to get out. any info will be appreciated. thanks!
My gal is in the dance club. And thanks to her, we can't go anywhere this Mar holiday as she has to go for dance practice (SYF) everyday from 130-430pm 😢

If yr gal is selected for SYF (usu held in Apr)..she will be required to stay back twice a week (Wed / Fri) from 330 -530. Last year, we have the option of taking the sch transport at 6pm (mine was $10 per trip)..but this yr, parents has to arrange own pick up.
My gal wanted to call it quit earlier this year as she was very exhausted..I can understand, as it is very tiring to be up since 530am and stay back till 530pm (longer working hours than normal working adult!!) She tried to complete her homework in school, but if she had enrichment (usu 130-330pm)..I'll let her finish her homework as much as possible at night..so far, she can do it. Only once or twice, I asked her to get excuse from her teacher to hand in her work later.
The dance session will reduce to once per week after the SYF..and hopefully she will find it easier to cope. I have told her that if her study is affected in anyway by the Dance club, I will write in and request for withdrawal...I do not have time to manage her sch work since she is staying back in sch thrice a week. But luckily, she does not have major issues with her academic results :xedfingers:
I think this dance CCA thing requires commitment from both parents and child..be ready to arrange own tpt..ensure that yr child does not miss any practices without invalid reasons..

              Hi bebe,

I pity your daughter. On top of having to stay back after school for practice, she still has to go back this week. If she is finding it to cope, it is time to consider taking her out. My daughter has to attend remedial twice a week (thu & fri). She is in p2. If she has to spend 3x a week in school for remedial and CCA, I will write in to take her out of CCA. Ultimately, her studies and energy will be affected and I can’t afford that to happen.

I did tell her to be mentally prepared that this dance club thing is quite demanding. I will see how far she can take it further before I write in to pull her out. Today I ask her if she still wants to quit..she said no..and in fact looking forward to the actual SYF competition :skeptical:

This SYF thing is demanding in terms of practice and time required. School has been brainwashing girls to take ballet and all those stuff...my gal came back several times requesting to take whatever activities they were brainwashed. She is so tired after Thur remedial, how can I agree to her taking CCA as well ? No way. She is weak in her subjects...we have to revise everyday. If she has to stay back 3 or even 4x a week, she will slide even worst.

It’s really a tough call. There are kids who are not academically inclined but who are really good in a sport or talent. The CCA gives them the confidence and discipline that perhaps their studies do not.

There are of course many bright kids who can multi-task well. They can obtain good results, be a school prefect and still put in the extra hours for a competitive CCA. These kids are naturally blessed and need the variety and challenge of multiple activities.

I do know of many girls who eventually drop out of their niche CCAs as they approach P6. I think mainly it’s the parents who panic as PSLE looms! Sometimes it’s the girls themselves who are just tired from the rehearsals and practices.

If CCA takes up a lot of time with practice and studies are affected, many parents will freak out. My daughter is weak. Very weak. If she is selected for a CCA which requires her to stay back after school 1-2 times a week + remedial, I will definitely take her out of the former.

My elder gal is not so academically inclined so I actually did not let her participate in the enrichment activities..she only has a CCA in school that requires here to stay back till 4pm once a week..and supplementary for science an hour once a week. My #2 is more of the study smart and competitive type, and so I will let her expose as much as possible. I guess for different kids, different stroke. We, as parents, will hv to keep monitoring and watch out for signals if the kids are not managing well.
