All About Choosing Piano Schools And Teachers

Noted. My most sincere apologies. My intention is to merely share a good teacher with parents. I have never perceived my forum posting as a form of advertisment. Perhaps the line is now blurred between blatant advertising and genuine sharing.
Please keep any form of advertisement out of this thread, thanks.leongstella:
Hello everyone, I thought I would like to add a note here for everyone.
I know of this piano/cello/violin teacher around Tanjong Katong area. He graduated from Guildhall School of Music & Drama, specializing in violin performance. From what I understand, it is the leading conservatoire in UK.
He has about 17 years of teaching experience. Very flexible and dynamic.
His ability is also quite amazing; has helped highly functioning autistic child to learn more about music (patient man), to guiding students to be exam-ready (for their Music Elective Program/O Lvls/A levels/SOTA/etc)
Teaching style is unconventional - combines about an hour of lesson with music documentaries, operas & composer movies. This is so that the child can develop his own interest (hopefully, also passion) for music.
I have attached a link to a news article about him, featured in the Business Times here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9PnZcq_CrMYRXB4QWxkWEVRamVja0dFNmgxUlpQUQ/edit?pli=1#
PM me if you wish to have his contact! -

Your initial postings are all about 'sharing' this fantastic teacher of yours. I am not sure how much more blatant it can get. But I am going to give you the benefit of doubt. Why don't you ask the teacher to come here and contribute, I am sure this forum would benefit from a teacher of his stature and experience. -
Dreamaurora:
With all due respect, I don't think there's a need for me to vindicate myself to you. I did what I wanted to do - that is to share. There's no need for me to answer to a 'higher authority', which is your assumed position. As equals, I reserve the right to post whatever I wish to share. If this forum wants to benefit from his experiences, one can always give him a call - to ask and share. One doesn't need to come onto the forum to justify himself - of what basis does he have to comply to you? Since your curiosity has gotten the better of you, why don't I give you his number & you can enquire?leongstella:

In that way, for your own personal conviction (which I assume it is so because no one else seem to second your suggestion), you can see for yourself that he is indeed what I have shared as.
I hope you take away a less prejudiced outlook in forum activity and have given you some food for thought through my response.
Cheers.

I was informed in another thread that the link to the Business Times article is broken, so here it is: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B9PnZcq_CrMYRXB4QWxkWEVRamVja0dFNmgxUlpQUQHello everyone, I thought I would like to add a note here for everyone.
I know of this piano/cello/violin teacher around Tanjong Katong area. He graduated from Guildhall School of Music & Drama, specializing in violin performance. From what I understand, it is one of the few leading conservatoire in UK (as very kindly pointed out by a fellow forum participant jce).
He has about 17 years of teaching experience. Very flexible and dynamic.

Teaching style is unconventional - combines about an hour of lesson, with segments of music documentaries, operas & composer movies (NOT INCLUDED IN LESSON TIME - ON TOP OF LESSON TIME).
e.g. 1 hour of actual teaching + 20 minutes of movie = whole lesson
This is so that the child can develop his own interest (hopefully, also passion) for music.

So in what way sharing about this fantastic teacher actually related to this thread? I don't see the connection at all.

Do let me know if you are keen on having his contact for your own benefit.[/quote]So you seem to believe that you are the one taking the moral high ground. Just because you are free to do something does not mean you SHOULD do it. Let me give you an analogy, imagine going to a teacher's student concert and you start talking with the members of the audience and shared about your own fantastic teacher and giving out contact of your teacher. Yes, there is nothing that prevent you from doing that, but i dare you to do it.
Your postings in this thread do not add anything at all to this thread, but anyway since you're convicted that you are right and i am wrong, i cannot do anything to change your mind. But other people can see and like someone said in the other thread, no one will believe you if you keep spamming the other threads with your 'sharing'. You will just be giving you or your teacher more bad rep.
I hope that is food for thought enough for you. -

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I rest my case. Others can make their own judgments. This is a forum, where we are free to share; not a battlefield of keyboard warriors. Let them make their own assumptions. I did my best in sharing.
Let this end here, for the sake of civility and courtesy.
Thank you. -
I am inclined to believe that leongstella is the teacher himself or someone who is very closely related to him. even if it is genuine sharing, it could have been done more tactfully.
But anyway, dreamauroa, out of curiosity. How would you handle the situation if another teacher or audience attempt to poach students in the activities you organize? -
sacredmusicals:
To be honest, I think there is nothing I could do if someone start doing that in my concerts. Chasing them out will most likely cause a scene. So I will just need to have faith that me and my students' playing are of good enough quality to deter troublemakers like this.I am inclined to believe that leongstella is the teacher himself or someone who is very closely related to him. even if it is genuine sharing, it could have been done more tactfully.

But anyway, so far in Singapore, the established teachers here are quite civil. They don't actively poach students from other teachers. But in other countries this is not the case from what I have been told. Gifted students especially are prime target for poaching and some teachers will send their assistants to scout around festivals and competitions for these students. They would then approach the students or the parents with an offer. Some other common mischief that teachers will do include pasting their posters on top of another teachers' posters.
Yes, some will argue that students are not teachers' property and as such they are free to switch teachers. Yes, that is absolutely correct. But remember that good teachers do invest a significant time and effort in a student. Teachers are more than just service providers, they are also educators. That is why I am very careful when it comes to handling transfer students. Whenever I receive an enquiry about transfer, the first thing I will ask the parents to do is to thrash out the current issues with their children's teachers first. At least give the current teacher a chance to explain and rectify first. Then after that only after the situation is no longer salvageable, I will consider taking the students in. If the teacher is someone I know, I will also consult and advise the teacher to solve the problem. If cannot, then I will ask if he/she is okay with me taking the student. I think that is the least I can do to maintain civility among my circle. -

With his fee rate and qualification, this will be the other teachers' concern.
