Seriously, Cluelesmama and Neko, perhaps your dds’ are starting to underperform because they’re bored? It’s very hard for anyone, kids or adults, to continue to work hard when they think the material is boring or uninteresting.


I was reading somewhere else - for some of these kids, it’s like us going to the doctor’s for 9mths and finding that there are no new magazines to read. Makes me feel fidgety just to think about it! Along the same lines, perhaps your kids need a higher level of complexity to be engaged? Give them more challenging material and they might perk up again. You might be thinking that they’re not scoring so well - maybe it’s because they can’t be bothered to make the effort rather than a case of not being able to. I’m very sure the GEP was structured to cater to kids like yours/ours. Like what some of the other mums said - can always go back if they are struggling.

I learnt a lot from my son’s Montessori teacher back then - he just plain refused to write. She said his reading level was very high, so rather than make him copy passages, she let him try comprehension and essay writing. I was shocked with the output - he had good understanding, his stories were fun, and even his spelling was reasonably good! This school never had spelling tests, so he must have picked it up through his reading. As he gets older, the jumps will be less clear cut since the material is more complex. So hopefully, the GEP curriculum, with its history and experience of meeting the needs of these kids, can help.

Thanks for the useful tips. Regarding above mentioned, may I ask if your son still do mainstream subject assessment books? IF so, which ones do you reccomend? When you say 80% in point 7) , are you referring to total average including SS? Or the percent of each subject? What CCA did your son join and which GEP centre were he from?

Nope, he doesn't do any mainstream assessment books. He'll be so bored. Both of us would rather he spend the spare time on his other interests.

However, in p4, I bought the andrew er maths to let him do the level 3 and creative thinking sections. But he didn't have time for it. So we left the book mostly untouched. Then this yr, I bought a synthesis n transformation book, which turned out to be useless as we became more confused than ever. That book doesn't explain the rules, simply gives you the answers which at times, leave us :? I'm still looking for a good book on this. Any recommendations?

Don't worry about catching up with mainstream syllabus. With the psle drill starting in Jun P6, they've enough practices.

Wat is the mean mark for a GEP student? Need a little clarification on the following assumption for results of GEP students:

Scoring
1. low 70s - borderline/average?
2 low 80s - average/highly acceptable?
3. mid 80 to high 80s - average/good?
4. low 90s - mid 90s - very good?
5. mid 90s - perfect score - Genius??? hahaha :lol:

From my ds’s 2 years experience in GEP, generally:


For Languages ie EL and HMT, baseline is 65%, average approx mid-70%. My son takes HMT. To score 90+%, the pupil is v gifted in the language. 80-90% is considered v gd. Most will score mid-70s or below.

For Maths and SS, average is mid 80s. For the v gifted or the v careful in math, 95% and above is easily achievable. Most fall under 80-90%. The weak ones or careless will score around 50-60%. To do well in SS, consistent work is impt. Pay attention in class and for revision, make an effort to memorise key points.

TO score above 90% for Science is considered v gd. most will score 75-85%. Average score is around 80%. Same for science, paying attention and putting in consistently gd daily work is impt. Understand key concepts well.

My ds only attends chinese tuition and piano lessons. He sleeps at 9.30pm each night and he finds time to play for at least 1 hr with neighbourhood pals almost everyday. Time mgt is key. As moms, we hv to remind them of deadlines. When doing projects, choose topics/bks tt ur child has a passion for.

DS v thankful for GEP. He finds it stimulating. I would encourage those who hv a chance to be in this prog to give it a shot.

For every GEP common test or exam, each school will release its own average and highest scores. This means that for certain schools, the average will be higher than others. Unfortunately, the MOE does not release the average for the entire cohort, which would give parents a better feel of where their kids actually stand with respect to the whole GEP cohort.

As a result, a child in a 'better' school which is consistently churning out higher averages may think he/she is 'weak' because he/she is always hovering below the school's high average and become demoralised/discouraged. Conversely, there is a danger that a child from a 'weaker' GEP centre may become complacent, thinking he/she is very good just because he/she is always scoring above the school's average (which may well be below the national average).

My DS is in Henry Park GEP P4 this year. The school transport information can be found at their school website. We started him on school bus as well, but found out later, with CCA + enrichment classes in the afternoon, he end up taking only about once every week. The rest of the time, due to fixed timing set by the school bus operator that cannot match to his release time, we end up fetching him ourselves. Last few months, my DS choose to take public bus back on his own, which he enjoy.

Don't know too much about what they are good at, but I observed that my DS batch is a close knitted bunch. About 32 of them split into 2 classes. We chose HPPS mainly due to their enthusiasm :grphug: in providing us visit to the school and helping us with our enquiry whereas the other 2 schools (not the schools you have shortlisted) that we have enquired, don't even bother to entertain us on the phone when we were choosing the school. :?:
