I am inclined to believe that leongstella is the teacher himself or someone who is very closely related to him. even if it is genuine sharing, it could have been done more tactfully.

I am very closely related to him (honest). However, that should have no bearing on his teaching, all it takes is just a look-see (since when the singapore society has become so cynical about a simple sharing?).

Dear leongstella, other well know piano forums such as abrsm, pianoworld and pianostreet also employs strict no 'sharing' policy. It is not unique to Singapore. If you have started another thread to 'share' about this teacher, that will not look as pushy. But the issue here is that your sharing does not add value to this thread, which is a discussion on desirable traits of a piano teacher. I do receive enquiries from kiasuparents, but my main purpose of coming here is to participate and share our thoughts among other teachers and parents in Singapore like jce and peanut_butter.

if she had pointed direct to the article and started a discussion about the teaching method (which is like only a short writeup of 2 paragraphs), then that is okay. But there is no attempt at all to spark a disucssion on that. Instead she asks interested people to pm her. That sounds like an advertisement to me, and other teachers like peanut_butter and sacredmusicals think so too. But of course everybody is entitled to their own opinions. And since the moderators here are okay with teachers advertising here directly as evidenced by the amount of advertisement threads here, I guess we just have to live with it.

But anyway, dreamauroa, out of curiosity. How would you handle the situation if another teacher or audience attempt to poach students in the activities you organize?

With his fee rate and qualification, this will be the other teachers' concern.

Haha, I doubt fee is a concern if the parents are really kiasu.

Interestingly, I've spoken to a few teachers from medan a few years back and they shared to me that they actually ban their students from attending another teachers' concerts, though I have no idea if this rule can be actually implemented.

You posted similar post under different subjects. It feels somewhat pushy. Not within our cultural norm. I have to scroll down your advertisements to get to the relevent topics. There is another forum(?) for advertisements. You may find relevent readers there.

You are even more thick skinned than I thought. You also have no interest at all to at modify your posts despite what some posters here have advised. Like jce told you that guildhall is not the leading, but you did not change anything. In any case, the polarising effect your posts have made is perhaps an indication that you should have thought things through and not put the blame on our 'inferior' Singapore culture. And since you are not planning to discuss anything related to mr elgar kwek's teaching methods, let me get some discussion started for the sake of this thread.

This is my dilemma: If I choose to defend Elgar Kwek on his teaching methods, I would only be spitefully beaten down by you (as proven with your insinuation that 'parents will not appreciate teachers taking up lesson time to show DVDs' - in which by the way, it is on top of actual lesson time, not part of it). & who knows, I might be seen as hard-selling his style of teaching.

If I choose not to, I would be perceived as someone whose sole intention is to 'blatantly advertise' for him.

I attached a Business Times news article, which also validates his teaching approach (not necessarily better, but different and may suit others more) - just for one's reading pleasure. No one asked me to elaborate, but instead I am being attacked for advertising.

How can I possibly share anything constructive with you amicably when you sit behind your monitor and label me \"thick-skinned\", \"blatant advertising\"? I am obviously taken aback by the hostility you have displayed, along with the alarming comments I see from dreamaurora.

Look, I have never said Singapore was inferior. I just said it's just different & I am of course experiencing a culture shock here. Who wouldn't when you are being treated like this? Put yourself in my shoes, new to the forum - just want to share - then BOOM, you get all these strange comments?!

If you still like me to share what I know about his teaching, I'd be more than happy to. Although I do think it is much better if you hear it from the man himself, which I suggested to dreamaurora if she wanted to learn more.

I foresee that this will be a 1000 word reply . I will post my thoughts in one or two days time.

I am currently looking for keen and passionate students of any level up to diploma to tutor. I am now a student but has been teaching part time at various music schools. Right now I am doing this for passion and the fees charged will be at a reasonable rate.


Lessons can be either conducted at my place on a Yamaha C1 grand piano or at the student's place.

Time slots: Negotiable

Qualifications: DipABRSM performance
