i think homeschooling is the best option for kids, but apparently this idea is not popular in singapore

I ever have that thought before, will see how she cope… Have the idea that homeschooling will be more rounded and enjoyable for the kids…did not have the courage to try it though…

It's a big risk to homeschool...bcos the PSLE cop is higher. As it is, we are struggling with the high COP for kids from primary schools with no affiliation.

MOE makes it compulsory for kids to attend primary school. But it doesn't control how their principals run the schools. Some principals do not care if students are not performing...problem is handed back to parents. They focus on high ability students. If MOE is overall parent in charge, shouldn't they look into how things are run ? There should not be top-down approach. The operation part is crucial.

Not only that. IF your child intends to get into a mainstream secondary school, then it's still best they do PSLE as a non-homeschooler. Homeschoolers do not get chance to participate in S1 posting. Hence, even if the child gets a very high score, he will have very low chance with places in one of the Top IP schools after everyone has been given places during S1, even with appeal. One friend realised that with one child altho' this child later got into a top IP school altho' at Yr 3 and not Yr 1. So for subsequent children, they put them back into a nearby primary school just for the Primary 6 year.

My dd is slightly autistic, has some difficulty with expressive languages and her mind tends to drift off in class occasionally. An average student, and may fall through the cracks in the current rat race.

Given that the sch is devoting quite some time to non-academic subject n her class has some hyperactive kids, I wonder if the teacher there has enough time to teach the academic subjects. Drifting off in class may also make her missing out some part of the lessons. She is attentive with 1 to 1 attention. I have an private English tutor who is now teaching her synthesis and transformation while I do not know what the Sch is teaching for english right now. I taught her division (took a few hours) and able to target her weak areas ( she do not know what do with the ones in the final step). The reason why I din homesch her is because her Sch is supportive of her needs n I know that we will drive each other bonkers if I taught her full time as my teaching style n her learning style doesn’t match perfectly. She also needs a social environment. i am inspired when I saw Chen’s blog abt her she teaches her son chinese. Hope I can do Sthg like that in June too.

You almost sound like you are describing one of my sons. He spent most of his 1st term in Sec 1 trying not to fall asleep in one class and another class - he spent most of it being distracted by how the teacher spoke (accent). Naturally he failed both subjects. Hope this term will be better!

There is a huge difference here. My boy refuses any form of help. So he's on his own. Very adamant about tat.
