Does phonics help in spelling?

Hi,


I would like to hear from everyone comment for learning phonics sound , is it just for reading only or it can help in spelling. I have send my daughter for the phonics sound lesson. According to the teacher, she said that phonics is for reading the words and cannot help in spelling. The child need to memorise the word for spelling. My idea is to learn phonics and help her in spelling but not memorise the words. Is it true what the teacher said? I am confused. Thank you

Of course it does. I don’t have a problem with spelling for both my 2 boys.


If that teacher said it does not, then you can forget about her. Look for another one who knows what is the benefit of phonics.

I believe it does. I use my own brand of phonics for spelling and it works well. But be aware that not every child can handle the phonics rule. DS1 can read well and he has no problem with spelling, but he was not able to internalize the phonics rules.


My take is to ensure your child reads, a lot. The rest will fall into place. Don’t panic if she can’t handle the phonics and blending although life may be simpler for it.

I will say it does BUT not 100%. Most of the Eng words can be spelt using phonics. There are some words like chaos, lingerie, business, machine etc cannot be spelt using phonics. I find it weird that the teacher said phonics is meant for helping in reading but not spelling. If phonics can help in reading the word, isn't it is like spelling the word out????!!! :scratchhead:

I also thought if he learnt ponics it would help in spelling,but he said his ICR teachers said memories the words.there should be a valid reason but don’t know why.

Just to share my experience with dd, no doubt phonics works well for spelling but can be a challenge for words like experience as it is more than often pronouns to sound like ex pi rience, therefore she spelt as such :slapshead:.

I fully agreed. That's the tricky part. Actually some alphabets have more than one sound. Like 'I' , if it's read alone with some alphabet, it's read as 'ee' like 'ill' and if read together with 'te', it'll be read as 'i' like kite, bite.

My DD is studying phonics in Learning Point and I assure you that she can spell without memorising the words. I tested her by using the sounds and she can spell it with no problem! Maybe the teacher is referring to the frequency words that can’t be done phonetically. Think you should clarify with the teacher.

I have withdraw her from the phonics centre. I have check from other centre also mention that phonics do help in spelling . Maybe, the previous centre did not teach much on phonics like blending of sound. I enrol her in other centre and my dd tell me that the previous centre did not teach. Hopefully, she can learn from the new centre.

Phonics does help. Although not all words can be spell phonetically. My daughter usually takes half an hour to learn her spelling and dictation whereas my son who doesn't have strong phonics foundation struggles. He has to memorized it and at times he will forget some vowels when doing his compo. Today he spelt thief as theif again. :frustrated: :spank:
