Hi Optimistforum,
The answer should be is. My understanding as follows:
1) this is a subject verb agreement question
2) any is the subject of this question
3) any is an infinite pronoun which is singular, as such, answer shld b is. -

Thank you ning_aknHi Optimistforum,

The answer book indicated \"is\". But, to be honest I thought the answer was \"are\". With your rationale I can see the correct raesoning in your answer. -
I double cfm with my friend who is an English tutor. She agreed with my reasoning too. But she did mention that in some countries, ‘are’ may be accepted. But in spore exam, there will only be 1 accepted answer and shld b is, unless the questions are worded differently.

Thank you very much, ning_akn.
The question is from an old book from 1962, called Grading Exercises in English, and it is a supplementary book to the First Aid in English book series (they are both published by the same publisher). It is pitched at those preparing for UK Year 7 (i.e., Singaporean P6). It enhances and improves my DS's writing ability. -
Woah… that is really an old book!!! For me, I am using Zoom In Vocab for Creative Writing!

Well, the old books are the same std as current Singaporean books. I actually had to make a special request at the British Library to photocopy the answers. They were not available on Amazon.
Fyi, DS is P3 and he uses the EPH Complete practice in vocab et al (P4). It is great for vocab and grammar -
May i know if there is any recommended centre for P1 english creative writing class in Seng Kang area?
My son is speaking and writing "rojak" English…but he enjoys writing though. -
Can anyone recommend good creative writing class in Bukit Timah area for Pri 4 &5? They are generally quite good in their English but I want to "buy insurance" for their creative writing. Super KS but I am very stressed up for their PSLE!
